My office recently began a return to work, two days a week. While it was exciting to put on pants and actually drive somewhere for once, at lunch I overstuffed my cob, tumbled down the stairs and promptly did my best impersonation of Vesuvius. I came away with a wicked case of tongue bite and a hot wet bowl that reeked so bad I stuffed it into a desk drawer, lest people walk by and think somebody exhumed George Burns.

That was last week. This week I bought a pack of butts specifically for breaks, and I really didn't beat myself up too much about it. They're quick, they're easy, yadda yadda yadda.

But I keep them tucked in my briefcase. They don't DO it for me anymore. They're a 99 cent cheeseburger when you've tasted Wagyu beef. They're a stale cracker when what you want is a hunk of focaccia.

Time, and patience. Tonight I was rewarded. It's raining great guns here in Southeast Michigan tonight, but there was a lovely cool and breezy break in the rain. I nabbed up my jar of Lane 1-Q, made myself SIT down and judiciously sprinkle a bit in. Flick the bowl, let it settle, just a weeee push of the pinkie and then twist in a goodly knob ala Frank Method.

I stood in the wind with a coffee standing by and from first light to dottle it was a cool and lovely and creamy smoke. That slight coconutty room note snatched past my nostrils a few times. Zero relights. The cob was barely warm in my hand and I sipped it down to ashes. Serenity. Whatever this thing IS, I'm beginning to GET it.

Pipe smoking is mindfulness. It is a meditation. I'm still very much a junior at this round table but it's starting to truly dawn on me. The sage advice of many here and the YTPC has helped immensely.

Thank you.

Your experience is what binds us. Transcends written words really but you nailed it. I had a hell of a week and both my smokes tonight scratched that itch. I had a pretty good meal, enjoyed watching a great sport event, caught up on a few streams I follow, briefly chatted with a friend, posted more than usual and had a couple of laughs from fellow members here. Tobacco was integral.

1Q is the only tobacco from what I consider a rather deep and wide cellar of both pipe and cigar stores that I've thrown away.

Either load a smaller amount in your pipe or let it go out and come back to it later. One of the beauties of a pipe. Smoking a cigarette is like having a quick bump and grind with a cheap crack whore. By comparison, smoking a pipe is like making love to a fine lady. I'd rather rub one out than resort to a cheap crack whore. If you can't slow down the pace during your lunch break, perhaps you should buy some nicotine gum.

That's funny actually. 1-Q and Sutliff Vanilla Custard are the two I kinda regret buying. But the fact I could make 1-Q burn cool for once and not hot and goopy was kinda neat. I'm still developing my tastes and bought a wide variety, but I know for sure I like burley in the morning with coffee, vaper for lunch and generally an English/Balkan in the evening. So far.

Well put. Lol. I have a nice snuffbox filled (presently) with W.E. Garrett sweet. That tends to take care of a nic urge when needful.

I wish I could add something of substance to this thread but I am not as eloquent as yourself...or for that matter, @hoosierpipeguy

if you’re not in a position to have a pipe gentle smouldering throughout the day, I concur with the smaller bowl, stouter blend and something that can be revisited over several sittings if need be.

When PAD strikes again, look at the Peterson 317.

For some yes, for others, no. I fill a pipe, light it, and go about doing whatever I was doing. Having a pipe burning throughout the day is just part of being me. I still regularly use other forms of tobacco and greatly enjoy each o

Yeah regrettably I cannot have a pipe idling along on the regular, as we have kids and do not smoke in the house. It's okay though; for my purposes I'm tuning down my nic habit from 'constant need' to 'something I anticipate and relax on the porch with."

The progression is so variable and subjective. Burley & coffee, pffft hell yes. Enjoy the journey.
I love that PA comes in those little pouch-in-a-boxes. They remind me of those single-shot cereal boxes we took camping as a kid. Prince Albert breakfast cereal! All the whole grain burley your body needs in the morning. Part of this complete breakfast.

Or at least part of the whole thing. But yeah.
Oh at work I use snus but on breaks I'll smoke semois or Five Brothers in my little Tsuge pipe. It's more satifying then it sounds like it should be. Oh it's a Tsuge metal blowfish and if you look that pipe up on smoking pipes they probably have a few (just to get an idea of what I am talking about, including the pipe chamber size).

Yeah I used snus for a while too. Love it but was going through a lot of it. I buy snus if I have to fly somewhere or take a long car trip with the kids. Snus got me across the Atlantic overnight with two small kids. ?

Yeah I understand why people smoke cigs, I haven’t in years, I see it all the time. A quick break, a few mad inhales to get some relief from life, and then back to the grind…. It has its time and place and appeal. But pipe smoking is certainly slower and more rewarding.

You can have a short break smoke with a pipe, either with a small bowl, or by smoking a medium or large bowl intermittently, letting it go out, and doing a relight for the next break. I do this at home all the time, when I can't sit down for an hour-long pipe. One packing can be enjoyable for two or three days if necessary. Just be mindful of letting it go out and store it in a fireproof place, like a crockery pot or such, until the next relight.
