I know nothing about pipes: to begin with.
This may sound dumb, but a few weeks ago I was thumbing through my Pointing Dog Journal and came upon a "centerfold" of a game vest and all sorts of accessories (porn for hunters - but mostly a little bit by the author of all the stuff he has on hand to be prepared for a day out chasing grouse). A pipe was part of his kit, described as a Nording Woodcock, and I couldn't stop looking at it. I've always thought about experimenting with pipe smoking but resisted for decades. Next thing I found this place and have been lurking and reading up on various topics, rewatching old Sherlock Holmes movies, chasing some interesting videos and even picked up some tobacco samples and a couple of pipes. Haven't made the leap to lighting one up yet, but I'm pretty darn close! LOL, it's not like picking up a pack of Camel straights when playing pool back in college --- a lot to know and appreciate and so . . . I kept lurking and finally decided to join and maybe participate a bit, but really nothing to offer and mostly questions to ask. Reading a lot of the tips and threads in the Beginner section.
Looks like a quality spot for like minded people to have civil and interesting discussions and share information and looking forward to spending a bit more time here and feeling comfortable about knowing enough to take the plunge. Chasing pheasants this weekend (close to the Minnesota border, we aren't open yet) should put me and Linus (he's the setter) in the mood to start putting some of this research to real and good use!
Thanks!
