My trusty tamper/pipe tool. The cleaning spike just broke off. :(
So, now I am looking into buying a new one - a better one. Since we can't all get the magical Uncle Arthur tamper with its mystery ring, I was wondering: Do you have any recommendations? This time I am willing to spend a lot more on this essential tool.

I use a 3-in-1 czech tool. Probably like the one you just broke. Several members on here swear by pipe nails, but I have no opinion on them. I will say don't use a Bic pen cap. The burning tobacco will melt the end and stink up something awful. :laughat: Yes, I tried it and won't ever do it again.

I'm not feeling the pipe nails, I am looking for something a bit fancier (like maybe a Dunhill pipe tool, but they are rare).

I have an Old Boy with a tamper, but I don't want to use it since it is so clean and pristine. :D

There are a few very cheap 3-in-1 tools on dealextreme.com, they don't look too bad and does their job well.

Do you need the spike or do you just want a tamper? I use everything from wooden dowels to my new $120 brass tamper (which I haven't used yet; see below). Yet hardly any of them have a tool. Noah Wiley makes some nice wooden tampers, without tools, for a decent price (see them at smokingpipes.com.

I definitely need the spike, I use that for "stirring" and emptying out the bowl.

Hey juni, I've had a couple of Tsuge Bamboo Tampers and they work great. Here is the link:

Although my best choice is to keep the tool IN the lighter, as in Corona Old Boy Lighters. Here's the one I have:

And no, I don't work for smokingpipes.com. They just have a great website!

That Tsuge one is really tempting (and affordable). I already went and ordered a Dunhill one though.

This is my favorite pipe tool, I tend to agree with Bubba, more tamping nustead of less, this tool feels good in the hand and when I am relaxing with my pipe I tend to use it as A worrie bead, enclosed is A pic so you can see the size, it is pictured with A 5 shot revolver
