Is This Kaywoodie Really A Sandblast?

...it looks awesome, but I think it's actually rusticated?
It's either one of the most perfect blasts I've seen,

or one of the finest examples of a rusticated fauxblast I've ever seen.
Is this an old pipe,

or a newer one?
I'm glad it was 57g and 7" that put it outta my sweet spot,

otherwise I would have been bidding intensely.

I agree, that's definitely rusticated, and nicely done.
The four digit shape code puts stummel manufacture in between 1929 and 1939 if I'm reading the pipephil timeline correctly.
The stem is problematic. No logo? No insert for the stinger? And the bend in the back third near the button is a flourish I've not seen on a Kaywoodie.
My conclusion? A lovely home renovation project on a good old burner.

I wonder if this was one of the Made in England Kaywoodies?
If it really is an old one, who in the hell was doing rustication of that high caliber?!?!?!?

I've never seen another done so well, especially on an old pipe!

Great faux blast, if that's what it is. Kaywoodie currently does a stinger-less -- no drinkwell screw-on stem --

blast pipe in its Saxon line, and the stem is fair quality, not chewy plastic. When you can find them, they

sell for next to nothing, less than thirty bucks, and smoke well. Had to refrain from buying another, but I

have aplenty pipes already.

Yeah, it's usually obvious, but in this case I was eyeballing that thing somethin' fierce because Kaywoodie could put out some mean blasts...
...I think they did it with a tumbler type of machine?
Alotta rusticated pipes end up being mis-listed as blasts...
...what about a sandblasted meerschaum?

Bill Feuerbach does a tumbling process with his new POY and Hand Made lines. I think blasting is also part of the process. I have a 2005 POY and Andy C commented on the process he uses (Docwastson).
Someone got a nice four digit KW pretty cheap!

Some shapes and pipes really bring the bucks. I was surprised this one went as high as it did, but the shank logo pipes (particularly in that shape), can surprise you. The stinger was cut off this one, which usually cuts into the value to the collectors.

Old Kaywoodies increased right when I got interested in them! :x
Those chubby pipes don't show up that often, so they go for surprising prices. But a prohibitive price for me might not be so bad for you. Those old '30s KWs are good pipes - I have yet to find a fill in the dozen or so that I have bought.
I agree with Lonestar, that pipe is rusticated, but judging from the nomenclature layout, it was in some way rusticated from the factory. As Pruss opined, maybe some artisan applied that beautiful carving later - it doesn't look like any stock job I have ever seen.

I believe, of the older pipes, only the Thorn and Relief Grain are sandblasted. Four digit shapes with the on shank clover logo, now those can really command lofty (for "drug store pipes)prices.
