I've always wanted to try pipes so I finally am, and having some fun trying to restore a few as well. I hope the picture downloads. I bought a Dr grabow cob cheap on eBay partly for the look and for the history (sort of) factor. When I received it there was a whole section darkened, clearly filled with something. At first I thought it was a loss, not knowing what I would be smoking, but as I look closer it is the same substance the top is hardened with and some other older ones seem to have. Could it have come that way. I also wondered if it was just wood glue. Any ideas.

It appears to be the plaster that they used to give a smooth finish to the outside of the cob. With use it tends to darken. From what I see should be no problem smoking.

Its great! Thanks for the responses. I like my MM Legend that is completely unfinished, but I really do like the old look of this cob. Any chance anyone knows how long ago Dr Grabow stopped selling cobs? I read they were all made by Missouri Meerschaum but couldn't find any kind of timeline.

I agree. That's nothing. I was all ready to say don't smoke it if it looked like some kind of odd repair, but this is just a well-loved cob, good for another thirty years. I am of the school that cobs are not disposable pipes (unless you need them to be for fishing or camping). They last and last, and usually only get better.
