I guess my question is,'How long does it take you to finish a bole'?

This is a great question because lately, my pipes have been running very hot and I know that I'm doing something wrong. I am still new to pipes so any help would be greatly appreciated. 8)

I wish I could give you any kind of exact answer to this question.....The duration of a bowl of tobacco can vary, for me, anywhere between 25- 60+ minutes depending on the quantity of tobacco, dryness of the tobacco, relative humidity and character of the tobacco. Don't let duration of bowl be a cause of anxiety for you.....but hotness...that's another issue. If you're puffing the pipe instead of sipping it, your smoke will go too fast and too hot. All of this will come with time....so no angst...just slow down and enjoy another bowl (as long as your tongue is doing okay.).... :D

I can make most of my pipes last 20-30 minutes.. and some of my larger bowls like the Om Paul or large Wellingtons I can puff for an hour more or less.

Yep, it all depends on what you're puffing and how hard you pull on it through the pipe to make it burn faster and hotter. Simple answer is slow down and enjoy.

Yes I will admit that I need to consciously slow down and that is possibly a good percentage of my problem. Had really bad tongue bite earlier in the week which is probably related. :?

I think Pipetrucker's mention of the type of tobacco is most important. IMO, if you're puffing furiously, or just deeply and frequently, maybe you should move to a more flavorful tobacco -- or maybe a stronger one.
Conversely, if you keep losing the ember, move to a less flavorful or weaker blend so that you can puff on it more or less continuously and it won't have a chance to go out between puffs.
A medium sized bowl, ¾" x 1½" chamber, more or less, should last about an hour -- subject to the variables that Hilojohnny noted.
A review of the Tobacco Pipe Packing Methods - Part 1 & 2 videos by Bob would be beneficial too. The links are in the lower left column on this screen. (Not all, but nearly all pipe smoking problems can be traced back to improper packing -- that's just how important the packing issue is.)

I think cortez is onto to the big issue...remembering HOW you packed the bowl in relationship to how you go about the intake draw throughout the entire smoke. Then remembering what works when it comes to a packing method for you.

I concur with everyone above.

There is no hard and fast rule about bowl duration.

Some things that can effect your smoking duration:

Tobacco Preparation,

Packing,

Good Char and True light?

Puffing technique,

Tamping technique,

Size of the bowl,

Choice of tobacco,

Choice of pipe,

Is it raining, drought?

Hot or cold?

Windy or calm?

Fish biting or not?

Mad or glad?

Reading, watching a movie, listening to music, playing poker, party or thinkin' drinkin'?

Is the traffic good or bad?

Lots of variables can affect duration, and I might add enjoyment.

A lot of good info and feedback in this thread. For me, smoking time depends on A LOT of factors that have already been mentioned.
One thing that I would like to add is about how hot the bowl gets during smoking.
A good rule of thumb is to not let the pipe get so hot that it is hard to hold in the hand. Another good measure on the heat is to place the bowl against your cheek because your cheek is sometimes more sensitive than your hand.
You should be able to hold it in your hand or against your cheek for a long time without having to move it from the discomfort of heat.
If you have to pull it away from your cheek or move it from your hand before you get to a count of 5 (a slow count of 5), you are smoking way to fast.
Smoking too fast and too hot is a contributor of tongue bite.
If the pipe and/or smoke becomes too hot, set the pipe down for awhile to let it cool. After it has cooled, you can start smoking it again, but remember to go at a much slower smoking rate.
Another thing to remember is; if you are smoking too fast and the pipe is getting very hot, you can actually damage your pipe by causing a burn out. Burn outs are not repairable.

One more thing. Enjoy your smoke. Sit back, relax, don't be too concerned about how many relights or how long the bowl lasts.

hrm pstlpkr left out something, I think.

* whether the people around you are good company or bad.
I really dislike smoking my pipes when there's a crowd around that is most uncomfortable bunch of yahoos to be in association with, and with no intelligent conversation to be entertained and thoughtful about. gah~!~

pipe smoking is something I do in total solitude.....don't need no stinkin negative, uninformed, biased opinions being shoved my way.-...like George Carlins routine on the Ten Commandments....the most important one that they left out " Thou Shalt Keep they Religion to Thy Self"

All good tips. I can stretch most of my briars to 1.5 to 2 hours normally. It's either smoke fast and hot or relight a dozen times (yes, I do). I prefer the latter.
I've also noticed smoking a fine-cut shag like 5 Brothers gets only about a 20 minute smoke in the same pipes I can smoke for hours with mixtures or rubbed-out flakes.
