I'm a big a fan of PA as the next guy. It's my go-to when I'm working outside on the farm or grabbing a "quick" smoke throughout the day. But it occurred to me: is PA actual tobacco leaf? Or is it "sheet tobacco" like most cigarettes today - ground up stems, etc, pressed into a sheet and chemically treated prior to being shredded not ribbons? For that matter, is all OTC tobacco actually just "sheet tobacco"?

Hmmmm, no idea... but that's a good question. I wouldn't say all OTC leaf though; CB for instance, is ribbon cut if I remember right.

I agree with Kevin, most of the old otc drug store tobacco came out on the market before cigarettes were popular.

Just curious, does anyone know this for sure? I did a quick check online and couldn't find an answer.

Following the white rabbit
I had heard this rumor once in the past. An email to the John Middleton Company got the response that no, PA is not made from sheet tobacco but is a leaf product. I don't recall the specifics of the email now, but they were pretty emphatic that it is made from actual leaf and not processed "tobacco paper".
If you want your own evidence, just send them an email and ask.

whatever PA is made from, the product must be pretty decent--you don't stay in business for the better part of a century selling junk--

Whitebriar- I hear what you're saying but no brands are what they used to be nowadays. Companies change hands and use the same brand names. They take advantage of new technologies to reduce costs and often quality suffers. Many examples of this. I'm not saying that's the case with PA, but it's certainly possible.

absolutely sothron--SWR isn't really anywhere close to what it was--Carter Hall seems close, altho i didn't smoke much of it in the past--PA is still very close to what it was 40-50 years ago--may be some subtle changes, but overall it's still very close--
i just believe since PA is still likely the biggest seller of OTC/classic, they must have a really good product in the opinion of many customers--(i have no figures to back up that speculation about PA being the largest seller today--just unscientific observation on these forums)
