I knew some old timers in the 70s who kept their cheap drugstore pipes burning like a wood stove in a blizzard. They never seemed to have a problem. Might have been different if they had paid a lot of money like some do these days.

I don't have a definitive answer though I usually let my briars rest a day between uses -- a use could be several bowls in a day.
I'd recommend that you get a couple Missouri Meerschaum corncobs, they seem to absorb a lot of use, they aren't expensive to replace and they're good smokers,

My dad smoked pretty much all day, from right after breakfast until bedtime. He only had one pipe in use at a time, and these seemed to last a long time. Finally, they burnt out, and he bought a new one, sometimes filling in with another burnt out pipe that was slightly more functional, but never any back-ups or rotation at all. The advantage to having enough pipes to let 'em rest is to let them thoroughly dry out.

If your tobacco is dry enough, if you don't puff too fast and hard, and if you usually smoke to or very near the bottom, moisture should never be a problem. I even rinse my pipes with water, but it doesn't get absorbed, as moisture in tobacco does, due to the heat and moisture opening up the pores of the wood while smoking.

The problem comes when the heel and insides are chronically damp. That favors the growth of mold, nasty fermentation &c.
Not to mention the smell of the resins themselves, which the moisture seems to intensify.

My pipes rest when I rest. Otherwise, if you need to smoke while sleeping... just make sure the pipe is dry before you light up.

When you smoke a pipe as you are, it has no time to dry out properly. When the pipe is wet, you will not get all the flavors that a blend can offer. I will smoke one bowl in a pipe, let it rest for at least one day before I smoke it again. I would recommend either get some cobs, or buy more briar pipes. If you really like smoking a pipe, an investment in some good pipes will help you enjoy the tobacco that much more.

If you give us a price range you would spend on a briar pipe, we can steer you in the right direction.

A friend of mine who is also a pipe maker made a Remnant Pipe which was a broken pipe that he turned into his shop pipe. With the challenge that the pipe couldn't be smoked everyday for an entire year; he proved the doubters wrong. He took this pipe and smoked multiple bowls in it everyday, sometimes as many as 10 bowls, and did this for an entire year. I saw him abuse this pipe on several occasions. The pipe was well worn, but it with stood the beating that he gave it. I've seen this guy kill pipes, because of how much he smokes them. As he states; if you take a well made pipe of good quality briar you can smoke it daily. Here is a video talking a bit about it as the pipe reached the 1 year mark. The pipe is now framed and sits in Chris Morgan's (premium pipe maker) shop. Skip ahead to the 4:30 mark and there are pics at the end.

I prefer to rest mine after a thorough cleaning. You run the risk of damaging the fit between the stem and the shank. But if you clean out the moisture, I suppose there would be no problem.

I've had a couple of pipes go sour from prolonged use, but a good cleaning followed by prolonged rest cured that issue. One fellow I worked with had one pipe, a Peterson, which he smoked multiple times a day, every day. That pipe was black as pitch but he never had a complaint.

All pipes are not alike as the wood is not alike. Some may be true workhorses, others not.

Well on the bright side you only have to use your current pipe for a month before the other arrives. Alternatively you can procure more pipes and have the thrill of using either.

As others mentioned, resting a pipe allows it to dry, producing a cooler, more flavorful smoke. That said, when backpacking or other similar activities I usually carry just one pipe that I smoke several times a day. I find that letting it sit out in the wind allows it to dry rapidly.

metal, one pipe from one smoker does not make something a fact. You and I have gone back and forth over your friends experiment for at least 3 years. lol
Generally speaking, it is better to rest you pipes after every bowl so your pipe has the time to dry out and to smoke drier and more flavorful. I would be willing to bet, that more people dry their pipes after every smoke than smoke them all day, day after day for a year at a time. The idea that resting your pipe to get an optimum smoking experience has been around for probably 80 years or so. Everyone I know in the pipe community rests their pipes in some way or another.

I wonder what the results would be smoking one Falcon bowl 10 times a day for a year. Falcon bowls dry very quickly and probably could take the abuse. I don't think I would have the patience to conduct such a test.

I think the pipe would have to be wet, no matter how quickly they dry out. I still maintain that resting a pipe will make the next bowl taste better than if you smoke it one after another with no breaks in between.

One advantage of owning way too many pipes is that you have to let them dry out for quite a while, while you smoke the others in rotation. It still doesn't explain the quantity once you exceed several dozen, but between pipe number seven and pipe number 36, it's a pretty good excuse.
