Hey guys, I've been smoking for just over three months now and have just had a cheap and cheerful corncob for my flakes.
I may want to upgrade so do you have any suggestions?

The shape and style your interested in may be help to decide on a pipe to choose? The shape and style of a pipe brings me in more then the maker.

You don't say at what price level. I am the great pipe at really low price scout for Forums, or so I fancy myself.

Please at least visit toboccopipes.com and look at their Chapuis-Comoy pipes. The price might make you think

they are el cheapo turkeys, but not so. You get a well-engineered pipe with a smooth draw and a nice piece of

briar with some shape and style. Right now the inventory isn't great; many pipes pictured aren't in stock, but

you can sure get a billiard, bent or straight, and various others. Tobaccopipes.com has a $4.99 shipping charge,

which is about the best around. These pipe run $31 to about $46. Also check out, at Iwan Ries (iwanries.com),

their half-price sale held over from September; click at the top of their home page. You can get some pipes

previously discounted to $80 for about $50. At Cup O Joes, click on Nording, and go to his economy pipes,

Eriksens; these are great machine pipes that run about $50 and are beautifully manufactured. Of course if

you want to spend more, shop carefully and get your money's worth. But for you, or anyone else who wants to

add to their rotation on a budget, those are good leads.

MSO nailed it - let me just toss out my standard advice - get the best pipe you can afford.
Smoker's Haven has a ton of estates, including a lot of unsmoked estates. Also check out Briar Blues and their under $100 section.
Iwan Ries is nice, too, in that they give you Dunhill group size.

Everything MSO said, plus don't forget about Stanwell, one of my favorites for the past 45 years. Also Savinelli makes fine pipes in different price ranges. Check both out at smoking pipes.com. And while you're there, browse through all their offerings--you might find just the thing at the right price point.

There are normally great little meers at your local tobacco and cigar store in the neighborhood of 25ish dollars at least around these parts :puffy: I would not recommend a clay pipe while they are inexpensive for beginners because they have a steeper learning curve than your average brier in the sense that it is much easier to smoke them to hot.
My two cents worth anyway :D
and I love my clay pipe for the record :D
