My old mobile phone was a PAYG Motorola Razr clamshell thingy that I barely ever used unless I was in hospital. It ended up in a drawer after my provider stole my credit for not using it enough the thieving swine.

After much thought and chats with the few folk that I still know I decided to look into getting a smart phone and I settled on a basic Samsung Galaxy A-15 which arrived this morning.

No charger included (bloody cheapskates) but I knew that and managed to get my kindly neighbour to donate one of his drawer full of chargers so I was ready to go.

Out of the box & straight on the charger while I got my microscope out to read the quick start guide.....pretty hopeless was that.

Once charged I had to go through a whole load of ticking boxes and reading pages of gobbledegook then ended up stuck on the Samsung Account Login page. I didn't want such an account but couldn't progress without accepting. A quick (landline) call to Samsung sorted that out and now it works of a fashion.

I haven't got a sim card for it yet but I tried the internet and even looked up this very site but was locked out. Likely because I made up a new e-mail address for the phone which differs from my 'normal' one. I need to look into how to register again.

I'm impressed how much this thing does considering it's a basic phone.

Much to learn and no doubt much to confuse/irritate me but hey ho, I'm a member of the modern world now :col:

I think I've managed to access my PM account but for the life of me I can't work out how to put a Pipesmagazine icon on the home screen of the phone. Is that possible?

If not how to you guys log in?

At the moment I have to click on Google then type in Pipesmagazine....there has to be a quicker way no?

If you load chrome browser you can put the forum on the front saved searches. This site doesn’t have its own app. At least I couldn’t find one. Chrome will remember your login info. You will just have to open your browser and tap the forum icon once you save it.

Welcome to the club Jay!

It should be possible to put a forum shortcut on your home screen, but how you do it depends on your browser. If you'll tell us what browser you use, one of us may be able to tell you how it's done.

I get it. I was always resistant to all this tech, too. By the time people were getting cell phones i finally got a pager. By the time they started getting smart phones i finally got a flip phone. Etc. At least i'm a cheap date at the cell phone store. When it comes to smart phones i still always use base models. Heck, they have more computing power than the space craft that landed on the moon and i only use them for calls/texts or the occasional GPS directions. You'll get it figured!

Google Chrome is the work of Satan, at a network level. I used Firefox until it broke, then switched to Opera, which is fine.

Just bookmark this site, don't close the page - I keep 4 up and reload them when I want fresh data.

Except for a handful of times where politeness forced me to be a middleman-hander-offer at a table of people who were passing their smartphones to each other at a restaurant or similar, I've never touched one of the things, never mind used one.

I'd rather handle a leaking bag of pig vomit and rotting eels.

Thanks. I have since discovered that if I tap the Google icon on the desktop/homepage there is an icon for Chrome already in there.

I tried it last night for this Forum & it worked of a fashion. At first it loaded the front page but it was 'dead' inasmuch I couldn't scroll down or click any links. That has since cleared up and now when I select Chrome this website comes up straight away which I thought odd as I expected to see a homepage of Chrome where I could then select this Forum.....if that makes sense.

Still got much to learn.

One major pain is if I click on Google Play to download any apps it immediately asks for my banks details, that I'm not happy to do so will consult with my neighbour who is Samsung user to see what he says.

Another is if I click on something to see what it does I often as not can't get out of it and have to do a 'cold reset' I think it's called just to get back to where I was before

I love reading this thread on my smart phone.
I find it much quicker/convenient to use my laptop but so what.....I'm a modern citizen now and that's what counts eh ;)

Seriously though, I reckon I'll use the phone more once I get some new reading glasses that I so desperately need. As it is, I find I'm having to use a magnifyer to read parts of the screen.

Back in the days when beepers and Nokia cell phones were popular, I refused to jump on the new technology. Now, don't know what I'll do without a smart phone.
