Most pipe books tell you about pipes, how they are made, about the makers, about tobacco, how to pack a pipe, clean a pipe, etc.
Gary Schrier's book "Confessions of a Pipeman" is unique. It is the only "Lifestyle Guide" for the pipe smoker. I have read the 1st edition myself, which Gary autographed for me, and I love the book!
Another wonderful thing Gary has done for the pipe enthusiast is to bring back some fantastic books and catalogs that went out of print decades ago, and some more than a century ago!
Cynthia Sargent had a sit-down on-camera interview with Gary B. Schrier, who not only coined the term, "Pipeman", but is a true Pipeman himself.
I hope you enjoy the interview from on location in Las Vegas.

On her 2nd time ever interviewing someone Cynthia did even better.
I wish Cynthia, Jeremiah and I could just travel around the country all day every day interviewing people.
I'll work on that.

I really appreciate the effort to capture interviews of prominent people in the pipe culture.

In this year alone, with all the interviews and videos, of pipesmiths locally and abroad,

tobacco blenders, tobacco growers, retailers, industry personnel, and show coverage

PipesMagazine.com has done more for my education about the hobby than any other year decade

since the late 1960's when I first took an interest in pipes. Thanks! Top notch publication!
My comments about the interview posted at the blogsite.

Great interview! Gary Schrier is one of the most astute literary

forces in todays Pipe Community. He isn't trying to sell you anything

nor, perhaps even more importantly, he doesn't attempt to show us his

preferences as [/i]THE WAY. OK, so I don't agree with everything that

he says..., but it's to his credit that he doesn't expect total agreement.

He is a Pipeman who is able to intelligently discuss his passion(s) and

provide us with the means to become more knowledgeable in the ways of the Pipeman.

Great interview! My only criticism is lack of a tripod. Tripods make shots that are zoomed in bearable and make everything look sooo much better. OK. Film school rant is done now. I'm looking forward to more interviews. Thanks.

I agree Jason. I wholeheartedly apologize for the shaky camera movements. I am really disappointed that I did that, and it really bothers me.
We were winging it a little as my video camera broke right before the interview and I shot it with my still camera's video function. Either way, we should have had a tripod.
All in all though, I am very happy with how the interviews came out as we were flying by the seat of our pants. These interviews were totally spontaneous. I thought of the idea while we were already at the show, then typed up some questions on my laptop, handed them to Cynthia and started shooting.
She did a great job being put totally on the spot. Even though we had some shaky camera movements, we put a lot of work into trying to shoot something that had different angles and basic edits to keep things interesting and a little more professional than the standard YouTube amateur stuff where the camera just sits in front of someone with them talking to it.
We achieved the look of a 3-camera interview with one little Canon 7.1 Megapixel PowerShot.
Sorry for the long answer and I hope it doesn't sound defensive.

Kevin (& bubba),

Please don't think that I was upset by the shaky camera... it's just a small thing I see in many videos and is sooo easily rectified. I've been in many situations where I "fly by the seat of my pants" while shooting, so I totally understand. I have also chastised myself many times for not bringing a tripod. I've shot too much shaky, handheld stuff that made me motion-sick for me to really go off on anyone about it. Just consider it a friendly critique in the hopes of making the interviews and videos on this site even better.
I didn't think that the interviews came across as spontaneous, so I think that worked really well for you guys. I'm sure (if bubba and Cynthia can find time) it'll get easier the more you guys work together.
Again, I'm really looking forward to more interviews and videos, so keep it up!

One thing people need to know about Gary is that he drinks really good scotch and he's always willing to share.
