John Cleese, the tall lanky comic of Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, and A Fish Called Wanda fame, appeared on The Daily Show a few months ago and mentioned that he has two pet Maine Coon cats back in England, that he mentioned because they are one of the most distinctively American of cat breeds. They are big long-haired cats with tufts in their ears and between their toes. Maine Coons have sociable whimsical personalities -- I have two Maine Coons. Many of them like to be petted or scratched, and if you do this to their satisfaction, they topple over in delight. They have many desirable doggy traits while still remaining complete cats. Any other pairs of celebrities or other public personalities with interesting companion animals? I liked that such a distinctly British comedian would have the essence of American cats.

Cleese can do little wrong in my book. One of my favorite quotes:
When asked why he still lives in the UK despite working so much in the US, John Cleese had this to say:

Number one, we speak English and you don't.

Number two, when we hold a world championship for a particular sport, we invite teams from other countries.

Number three, when one meets the Head of State in England, one has to go down on one knee only.

The funniest man in the world?
Likely.
Definately a huge case would have to be made to disprove the claim. lol

Don't know much in regards to celebrities and their pets... but from someone who is not a cat person, I can attest that Main Coons are wonderful animals that are very funny to watch... my wife had one, when we were dating, named Beavis. He was HUGE and since I had never heard of these cats I was a bit freaked out by it. But he was so gentle and lovable it was hard not to like it. Poor thing was killed by her shitty neighbor, the asshole poisoned him.

I'm a huge Cleese fan. He's brilliant. Thanks for the quote jp.
As far as other celebrity/animal pairings, I've got nothing.
Edit: agreed mso, quintessential brit comedian with distinctly American pets is wonderful.

Heh. Everytime I hear about our "World Champions SF Giants" or NFL "world champions", I think of that Cleese quote.
Every so often I pull up a Fawlty Towers episode or two, and Wanda remains one of my all time favorite movies.

Love John Cleese! Had a vhs tape of his one time called "How to Irritate People", too funny!
One of the oddest pet parings I can remember though was Mickey Rourke and his little chihuahua Loki. I mean the man developed into one of the roughest, toughest looking guys you could think of, and I mean that a a complement, yet he carried his little dog with him almost all the time. Sadly Loki passed away a few years back, but it was so much fun seeing them together in photos.

Roy Rogers was an interesting guy in various ways. Unless I am confusing someone by the same name, I believe part of his musical career, before his cowboy song recordings, included being a blues musician. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) Roy Rogers comes up singing serious hard core blues on a widely syndicated radio show called Back Porch Music that originates in Chapel Hill, N.C. My sources say this is the same person. He also had his trademark much loved horse Trigger. If I'm right about the blues recordings, this is not white/country blues but hard core, think John Lee Hooker.

Roy Rogers, the cowboy, was never a blues singer or musician. Maybe your are thinking of Jimmy Rogers. He was big with Muddy Waters in the 1950's.
