This pipe is rather different from anything I have seen. It is at www.alpascia.com/detail.asp?/x=&detail=24024.0 It probably won't be there for long at $115. Might have a metallic taste. What do you think about it?

No, But I did email them for info, such as what is the bowl made of? More out of curiosity than desire for the pipe.

Yeah, Briar Boy over,on Pipe Chat just got one in black blast. I'm jealous! Great looking pipe. Briar bowl, metal top rim, base plate and mortise. Alpascia ran out of the blasts, but have two smooths. Iwan Reiss in Chicago has a black one. It'll go fast. Tempting pipe at such a low price no doubt.

I saw one from Japan similar to this one at a local B&M last year. It was smaller as far as I can tell and could be totally broken down to fit in your pocket. Under the bowl was an area to put tobacco to used as a filter. Ingenious! ...and expensive 8O

The bowl is definitely briar.

As a smoker and collector of metal pipes, I am aware of only 1 type that does not have a briar bowl: the Jima, which has a bakelite bowl, but is not properly a metal pipe since its outer bowl and frame is basically made of nylon.

So Roth is correct; there is never any metallic taste from a metal frame pipe.

The Tsuge arrived today and it's a beauty, nicely constructed with the bottom of the bowl being briar, i.e. the cap on the bottom is to balance the look and the one on top completes it. Purposely chose a new bag of Reverie which can be a bit on the wet side and difficult to keep lit, this was no exception so when the pipe bowl got warmer than I like I laid it aside to cool and dry the tobak a bit. When I later went to have it as a DTG it was fantastic, the pipe is lighter than most of my cobs and smokes very well with the metal not getting hot, sure to be a favorite. Barely knew I had a pipe in my mouth the whole time.
