A couple of interesting auctions ended in the past few days.
8 Dot Patent Era Elgin - Unsmoked

BIN of $800, but I think it had an offer option

8 Dot Specially Selected - pre-WWII

I've never seen an 8-Dot in this shape before, nor this stamping

Any ideas?

Missed those. Nice pipes! Interesting to see an Unsmoked Sasieni from that time, with box and all! I just recently grabbed an Unsmoked pre-republic Pete with box and all for a bargain.

This is another example why you really need to know what you're doing. That "Specially Selected" isn't an early pipe. It's a 1980's commemorative pipe that was stamped by the successor owners. Look at the dots. They're large and equal distant. That's not how Sasieni dot were arranged when Joel ran the company and personally selected certain bowls to be specially stamped. Hopefully the new owner never finds out that he paid close to twice market.

Damn, that learning curve is spendy. I watched them and never thought of bidding, but that's ridiculous.
Sometimes touching the stove is the best way. Me, I prefer asking around.

Jesse, oddly enough the seller uses the name "thinkbefore". The seller's disclaimer had be watching and not even touching the "bid" button.

Well, Jesse beat me to it about the second pipe LE 90 (presumably Limited Edition) Something about the prince just makes me "uncomfortable", it's just a little too perfect. Only one bid... I looked at the seller's other listings, I wouldn't go near ANY of them, just my gut reaction.

An additional thought, I could show you at least two images of Eight Dot Rustic pipes where the town name is directly below Sasieni, and they also managed to fit the Patent No. on the shank...

Ah, that was the first thought that popped into my head when I saw it, but I couldn't remember if they used the florid Sasieni script with fish-tale.
I saved the pictures of the 8-Dot commemorative that was sold unsmoked with the string and box, and yep, old style florid Sasieni logo.
@dmcmtk - that old Eight Dot Ashford I won and later returned had the patent number on the stem. I'm pretty sure that I've seen that before.

Yes, absolutely, I have seen the Patent number on stems before also, I wasn't saying it was dispositive. Also, since I mentioned them, here are two other Eight Dot Rustic markings; a MELTON, a GROSVENOR, and the ELGIN from the OP.

There is nothing even remotely satisfying about that Coronation, except that is is stamped coronation. :(

I am quite saddened by this Coronation. I can almost hear Herman Lane demanding more high grade freehands in that stern voice of his. More high grades!!! This can happen and to make matters worse the run of plateau starts to lack the grain of the previous batch. Then, 'when push comes to shove' you get a piece like this coming through with a 'chipped top' to simulate the bark of the plateau briar. Yes, I agree, not a very inspiring piece from the 1970s.
