Thank you Al ; I think the grain is mesmerizing.
As with Scott's pipe the finish was in fine condition under the dirt.
The oxidation on the stem was easily removed without too much loss of material.
The bit was fine.
On the pics. the rim is yet to be polished.
I didn't have to do anything to the rim on mine except clean it. As the photos show, my bit was horrid; however, it was a straight auction for $93 all-in, so it's hard to complain. With minimum wage labor, I guess it costs me $400? 🤑

I whiffed on this pre-Republic and regret not going over $150.

I bought the sister pipe from Tony Soderman, about 10 years ago, and never seen another one until this week. A "Dublin & London" pipe with "Made in Ireland" COM. Mine has a fishtale button and I wish it was a P-lip.

Yeah, I was the underbidder.

It's a rare enough shape that I'm certain it's worth more, but I'm not a big fan of that shape and I already have too many rare Petersons that I don't smoke.

The winning bidder did well.

I don't understand the appeal that drove this one to the price level it sold at. Is a 309 that rare?

No, it's an anomaly or two people who 'had to win at any cost' - that price is way above current market value for a post-1963 309. I have two blasted 309's that are older and in as good of condition. If I thought I could get that price for them, they'd both be on ebay...maybe they will be by the end of the day
