Last night I found the U.S. National Archives' channel on YouTube. I was up until roughly 8am watching WWII-era informative videos. Incredible. My favourite was an educational film for American GIs starring Burgess Meredith that covered the topic of how to act while in Britain.

Anyone else suffer from this affliction? What is it that keeps your mind stoked to all hours?

Humidity accompanying higher temperatures with no breeze, fan or anything to provide relief like AC. That keeps me awake. Love dry heat though...

Once I was finally allowed to retire on disability because of my pain from MS, I don't care about insomnia anymore. But I have taken a med to help for twenty plus years that isn't an opiate or addicting.

Sorry for you guys that are in pain.
@Hobie1Dog I could use that pill. That is a big one for me too. Maybe the main reason.
@Pagan My brother in law is a police officer and often complains of being unable to relax. He says it is like always being on the job.
@Davet Poor fella. My first apartment in Pittsburgh was a few hundred yards from a rail head. haha It was like Elwood's place on Blues Brothers. I can only imagine what it is like when that happens next to a home you own.
@Thomas I'm with you there. I abhor humidity. Back in the Army, we'd be training at White Sands or outside El Paso and guys would be moaning about the heat (96-98 degrees) and I'd laugh. Pennsylvania at 80 with 100% humidity was twice as bad. I have no idea how people live in Florida. :crying:

I hate pharmaceuticals, and have a poor track record with them, but finally tossed in the towel and went on Zolipidem ( generic for Ambien). Now I get 7 or so hours of good sleep, and 90% of the nightmares are gone.. it's not for everyone, and the stories about driving, having sex, eating the kitchen clean, are true. 8O

I suffer from insomnia and it sucks. I end up, on a good night, with 2 hours of sleep..rarely more than 3 ever. It began in graduate school and has not let me go since. I am finding a strong nicotine blend helps when combined with a good Scotch. Also, cannot do Ambien. I tried. My wife said I was incoherent and babbling. I do take Sonata which helps as long as I stay asleep. No hangover like I had with Ambien.

Insomnia ... that's a b****. I hate it when I have insomniac episodes. I get them in high periods of stress, and lately that has been quite the norm. Struggling between work, family problems and wrapping up my phd thesis. White nights are no longer fun. I used to spend them in bars chasing girls, now I just sit in bet staring at the ceiling, getting mad as each minute passes by ... I drank myself to sleep one time too many these past years, so that is out of the question for me, and heavy pills are something I am totally against. Melatonine helps, but not always.

I too suffer from insomnia due to pain in my spine. I recently discovered I also suffer from 'Restless Leg Syndrome' which I can assure you is no picnic. I have a digital clock on either side of my bed so as I can see the time whichever side I am lying on (can't lay flat on my back) and oftentimes I turn over every 8 - 12 minutes due to discomfort.
I usually hit the sack at around 11pm and get up around 11am, but twelve hours in bed doesn't mean twelve hour sleep for me despite shedloads of meds. It's more like five or six.

I went through the Ambien and other sleeping drugs for years trying to get a solid night's rest. But, as soon as I started smoking strong blends before bed, like Cotton Bole Twist, Dark Flake, and others, I have not had a single issue with sleep. I save the strong blend until just before bed, avoid any alcohol, and eat one bite of chocolate, fire up the pipe. As soon as I get to the bottom, I am drowsy and am asleep as soon as my head hits the pillows.

I am not sure if this works if you also smoke cigarettes or dipping. But, a really strong cigar works also.
I haven't had to take a single pill to sleep since.

Little insomnia, a prostate the size of a basketball and a small bladder are the crosses I bear when trying for a night of uninterrupted sleep.
Insomnia arises when I am unable to clear my mind at bed time. (Aleve keeps the arthritic pain at bay for now.) My only cure is to let my mind wander to a particular beach on Maui. I try to focus on the waves and not the nubile ladies in thongs though. If I let one image of a hairy, overweight man in a Speedo or thong intrude... I'm pretty much wide eyed awake all night until a second glass of port kicks in.

'40s and '50s training films are tremendously entertaining. Hard to choose between the WWII era practical stuff narrated by the tough-talking sergeant type, or the '50s era dating advice.

The treatment of race starting at 25:30 in that film on England. Very interesting for the time.
