Thanks for posting this, Kevin! It's a shame that most politicians have been bought out by the anti smoking lobbyist. Who cares if they have all the facts to back them up, it's just what makes them feel good it seems.

The entire smoking ban campaign is based upon lies, misinformation, and doctored "studies". Ever wonder where they get that "smoking kills xxx number of people every year" number? It's made up out of thin air. No death certificate anywhere in the world has ever listed tobacco as the cause of death.
Daniels is using that same old tired political theory that "if you say it enough times people will believe it is true".

Well it's not the backy that kills you. Backy causes cancer; as well as other harm to the body. You can't overdose from it unless you eat a pack of cigs or something I believe, but that is due to the fact that something like a drop(1ml?) of nicotine can kill you?.
I have a theory (based on nothing but thoughts in my head mind you) that the reason we are seeing so many tobacco-related deaths, (heart disease, various cancers, respiratory problems, etc.) is because the majority of the smoking took place back in the 50's or so. Don't quote me on the date but what i'm trying to get at is that a LOT of people smoked back when there was the belief that is was healthy to inhale and there was no such thing as too much. Well even too much water or vitamin C is going to be bad for you right? Too much of ANYTHING will damage your body.
So all the tobacco-related deaths we're getting NOW is from the generation(s) that smoked heavily during this time and are cluttering up all the statistics.
I believe that pipe smokers and cigar smokers tend to outlive cig smokers has maybe less to do with the chemicals in cigs and more with the frequency at which they tend to light up.
Just my 2 cents. Feel free to backhand me. None of this has been thoroughly thought through(alliteration lol). Just talkin' out my bum.
[Sidenote] Things like this get me a little mad. They actually put a price on each "adult smoker" and what they cost the nation in tax dollars. (first paragraph)

All I am going to say on this is simply thus: In Canada, the government has to publish its findings in entirety. A quick read reveals that the cost of tobacco use in Canada is valued at $11 billion dollars. Only three billion, however, is actually accounted for as direct costs (medical care); the other eight billion? Lost productivity...aka...BULLSHIT numbers invented to scare the sheeple into believing that tobacco is the cause of all our modern economic woes.

Realistically, though, with six-odd billion dollars a year gathered in this country in taxation of tobacco products, the politicians are not going to fight *too hard* to make tobacco dissapear. Thats just too big a pay-day for the government to pass up.
