I use one all the time, because I smoke mostly outside and a lot in the car on my way to and from work, errands, etc. I've not noticed any above-average buildup vs my old boy, matches, bic style lighters. It works the best for the outdoor environment.

I do it the same way @HawkeyeLinus described, hold the zippo just over the bowl not touching it, and direct it around in a little circle just pulling the flame into the bowl.

Same here on the outdoors which is 90% for me and almost always windy around here, would be lost without the Zippo.

I must say I had an extended indoor session yesterday and very much enjoyed the gentle flame of a plain old match out of a box.

LOL, I took a pic of this after a few bowls thinking is this what @jiminks means by an "average number of relights"?

Had some issues with not drying the tobacco for the first couple of bowls, and I was putting the pipe aside quite a bit as I was doing something else at the same time (not a "clencher", haha).
