As a new pipe smoker of a few months it was disappointing to find my favorite blend was being discontinued. Bk has often been an all day smoke for me. I purchased some c & d dark fired Kentucky hoping to use it to find or make a blend just as satisfying. Recently I mixed some with university flake and have discovered something I like almost just as much. Future plans involve mixing Irish flake with dfk, and expairimenting with dark Birds Eye and black Irish x to blend with dfk. That bbq rich sweetness and tang with a strong vitamin N with little to no bite is the goal. Any tips or thoughts? I’ve heard dark flake unscented is close but no one has it in stock so starting with the above attempts.

I like DFK, a lot. I still purchase tins and 2 oz. samples of blends I've never tried before. I use DFK and/or Perique to spice up any blend that I don't like too much. I mostly mix both of these (at condiment levels) with those cheap "bag tobaccos" that one can find at tobacco stores. I don't get scientific about it; just a pinch of this and a pinch of that with more base tobacco and I come up with something simple and enjoyable. You have to enjoy smoking the base tobacco to do this.

Gawith's Dark Flake Unscented would definitely make a great HH Bold Kentucky replacement! It's a little different, a bit more rugged and rustic, but still very smooth and a delightful smoke. I'd also recommend giving Kendal Dark (which is the exact same blend as the current production Dark Bird's Eye) a try, though it does get a little acrid for my tastes towards the bottom half of the bowl.

If you don't mind a bit of added flavoring then 1792 Flake, Coniston Cut Plug, and Irish Flake are all great dark strong blends too and exceptionally smooth. puffy

Liking Cob/1792 and having liked Bold Kentucky (when I had too little left to smoke, even ground it up and snuffed the rest!), I reckon I ought to try Dark Flake Unscented next time my inventory needs expansion.
Thanks for the brilliant and handsome idea, Skip.
