Then I will be willing to bet that pipe smoking is going to stick around if that's what we really want. Heck one is a product most people are shocked even exists and everyone knows about pipes. Things will change always but pipes are going to be here for a long time.
That’s an interesting comparison, but if you liken snuff to pipes, the variety has been greatly diminished over just the past few years alone. I’m a bit surprised too that they offer as many as they do.

it's had ups and downs but over all snuff has been on a steady incline.
There was a very real threat of it become either impossible to get or super hard to get and heavily limited. And none of it was clearly intended and more of a victim of obscurity.

That's a good point, I was astonished to learn nasal snuff still exists. As scary as a world with an STG monopoly is I think pipe smoking will survive it. Sure it will take a very long time to recuperate but even after they've discontinued everything on the chopping block we'll still have a bigger variety than was available to the average pipe smoker 50 years ago. Hell up until the 1800s tobacco was tobacco, didn't even have burley or Virginia.

This is a great point. Now ofc it doesn't make me any less pissed off about what is happening 😂
But I oft tell my friends as well when complaints of work etc come up... at least we ain't still in the coalmines!! Lol

While we should never use it as an excuse to get lazy or take outright abuse, one has to remain grateful overall to lead a happy healthy life and in many respects, there still has never been a better time in history to be alive.

Heck, the only reason we even know how many blends are lost is because we have the internet to tell us. Up until about 35 years ago you knew what the local shopkeeper or 3 had and that was about it. Maybe we should try to take a page from those ancestors books and slow down, spark a bowl and be content with what we have for a cool minute...

Exactly, and if you didn't live in a place big enough to have an actual tobacconist chances are you just bought whatever was at the local drug store. The dudes who smoked the same straight burley their entire lives never had to worry about the leaf becoming unavailable or the brand being bought out.

Harrumph! It is quite a bit harder to find Sir Walter Raleigh and Prince Albert these days, so us “codgers” are feeling the pinch too.

(Note…. the rancor is meant tongue-in-cheek…. but it is sadly reality too…. drugstore brands are definitely harder to get….. at least in my region.)

Have you seen Mr Snuff?

Simply Snuff is so funny to watch, I mean in a good way, he has such a good humor about him, and he seems quite the snuff connoisseur too.

yeah I remember buying shit in other towns just because I never saw it before. Or being limited by what the local had.

As someone who has gotten into nasal snuff through pipe smoking (a kind piper sent me a bonus sample of snuff in a trade), I’ll say that there is a surprising variety in the snuff world, and the barrier to entry for artisan snuff makers seems lower than that for pipe tobacco blenders. Snuff is also cheap as chips; for $75 a fella can buy enough to last 6 months, with a wide variety of styles and aromas/flavors in that purchase.

So if there’s a lesson to be taken from the snuff world, I’d say that the OP is correct: even a class of products that seem to be dying has yet a long life to live, if it doesn’t downright live forever.

If you want that old timey limited tobacco selection feel, just come north of the border! 😂

You can spend $55 for 50grams of Borkum Riff. If you’re lucky enough to have a better variety around you, you can splurge on $75 Capstan or one of 5/6 varieties of Cornell and Deihl.

You guys still live in the land of pipe tobacco milk and honey! When you’re feeling blue that Sutliff and MacBaren are closing down, just think to yourself - at least I’m not a pipe smoker living in Canada. Lol.

Now that I’ve completely depressed myself, I’m going to go and cry myself to sleep now 😂.

Today I learned that Gawith Hoggarth also makes nasal snuff, and now I want to try some! I'm still trying to kick a 26 year long cigarette habit and nasal snuff sounds like it could potentially offer a neat and affordable way to get my nicotine fix without breathing smoke into my lungs, and a nice old timey accompaniment to my 2 or 3 pipes a day. I think I'll have to put in an order with Mr. Snuff after the holidays! 👃

That particular snuff isn't made by gawith, its actually made by poschl for gawith. I much prefer the actual Samuel gawith and G&H snuffs. Just don't buy the tap boxes, they're notorious for the snuff drying out on the shelf before they reach the consumer. Get the 25 gram tins.
