I'm daunted by how many mason jars and how much room I'll need to lay in a lifetime's supply (like one or two hundred pounds)of tobacco like some of the more forsightful members here. SO! Any suggestions for BULK flakes that might not take up so much room, won't break the bank, but are still quality, tasty and will store for the VERY long term? Any tricks of the trade, like maybe a tobacco press to home-make Prince Albert cakes? Compact, economical, durable and quality tobacco is the goal here to facilitate true long-term storage. Any help will be most appreciated fellows.

Tougher for the Latakia and aromatic smoker since their favorites usually don't cellar as well as virginias/burleys. Food grade cans and nitrogen? Tobacco survivalism?
Seriously, pressing and vacuum sealing will very greatly reduce the bulk (I did a little experiment with a Costco purchased vacuum food saver once), but in the forums I've frequented it's usually frowned upon for the storage of better tobaccos since it stops or at least considerably slows the desirable effects of the aging process.

If you live in an appropriate place, you could consider growing tobacco plants.....Many smokers are beginning to do this.... :?

I will be planting a smoke garden this spring if I can get someone to work up a couple of patches for me. As for the flakes, check out the Peter Stokkebye flakes. I like all of them.

The Interwebs
StrongIrish reminds us of the first step in fruitful action--keep an eye out to your left for the action alerts (i just checked out the Nebraska petition). Take the time to write to your local and state reps. This is a participatory republic--

FOR NOW.

Grow your own, and if that's not up your alley, plan a weekend trip to a tobacco producer to tour a plant and see how it's done. There's a great video series on the MacBaren tour on this site, in fact!
