That all of my briars taste different then each other. Nothing dramatic but for instance the stewed fruit Virginia quality just pops more in my Rattray. My churchwarden makes the molasses notes in burly more distinct. And well they've been like that from the start. I have no clue what makes the difference including if I just smoke different pipes differently. But I swear there is a slight but noticeable difference in the tastes of every briar I own. And no it's not ghosting, I generally smoke the same thing most of the week in different pipes. And to give you an idea of how minor it is, it really only stands out in blends with multiple components.

I’ve noticed some of my briars will do the same thing. Bayou Morning in my basket pipe of my Rossi 8320 (both have wider bowls) give me more earthy flavors where my Sav’s and Nording (small diameter bowls) give me more that sweat cream like flavor. ?‍♂️ Luckily both taste good so I don’t think about it lol.

I swear and cuss too.... much to the consternation of my wife. I have, for the most part learned to do so under my breath, unless I am REALLY feeling ornery. ?

But, regarding briar taste differences.... I will occasionally notice a slight taste difference...... key word for me is slight.... but I tend to attribute it to a) the amalgam of slight “ghosts” of the different blends that have traveled through the pipe, b) slight tastes that come from a stem (vulcanite for example), or c) who the hell knows?

My wife would not be fond of my c) answer. ?

I'll go as far as saying different pipes cater to different blends, but I doubt it is true that certain shapes, brands, or finishes per se do better with set genres of blends. I think it is more particular to individual pipes.

Just thinking maybe in my case it’s some inconsistency with the blend or the way the pieces of flake fill the different bowl sizes and how much of the rubbed out portion goes in after the flakes.

that's the fun thing. Is it could be so many factors that interplay with each other that it's really impossible to tell for sure. I feel like one part is the draw on the different pipes, but I can't really tell for sure.

I have two pipes from the same carver. They were made from the same wood, they have the same bowl size and geometry, and they have nearly identical stem/shank length and bore. They both taste different and react differently to tobacco blends. One is my best VA pipe and one is my best latakia pipe. I decided not to think about it too much and just enjoy.

Every blend will ghost your pipe to some degree, just drawing on an empty pipe you can still taste the most recent blend it held.
Thus the idea of dedicating pipes to individual blends, and if you do keep track of it then on occasion you can mix it up and add some shades of flavor to different blends just by switching pipes.

I find this to be fairly true, but for me a bit more specific, I find short wide bowls tend to bring out the sweetness in a blend, so I prefer them for virginias. Tall narrow bowls I find condense and amplify the flavours of aromatics. And english blends are excellent no matter what they are smoked out of, but my preference lies with a bent bulldog.
Neat how we all find different effects from different pipes.
