I Say Of Course A Fancy Pipe Improves Smoking, Maybe

It's been proven with food that presentation can improve the taste of food. That sometimes eating the same thing on the good china will taste better then if you use paper plates. It's not a definite thing but enjoying something isn't just a flat experience it's not just the food in your mouth or the smoke, sometimes for some people seeing it on something fancy tells the brain pay attention this is special. So it stands to reason that an expensive fancy pipe could smoke better without physically changing a single characteristic of the smoke. Just something I was thinking about while enjoying one of my pipes. It's not a promise that if you find a pipe special that you'll have a better smoke but there is a very real chance that it will, because you're a human and we have these weird complex brains that we don't even really understand all that well.

Even if my favorite pipe smoked like crap (and I do have some that aren’t conducive to my particular way of smoking), I’d still enjoy the heck out of it. I’m one of the pipe smokers who enjoys the pipe just about as much as the tobacco.

I think I’m wired backwards. I have some nicer pipes I’ve yet to smoke, we have some China somewhere but I won’t use it, I had thousands of dollars of guns (that I tragically lost in a canoeing accident) that were never fired, etc.

I like things I’m not afraid to use. I’m hard on stuff so if it’s too fancy, I’m probably going to be more focused on not messing it up than enjoying it.

I think the most I spent on a pipe for most of my pipe smoking years was 60 bucks. And when I bought my first big money pipe at 100 something I felt real awkward smoking it. I kept thinking it cost that much what if I mess it up. So I totally agree the whole scenario can back fire too. The same way if you're eating at someones house and they bring out the fine china it can make you too self conscious. I feel like the most important part is there are also complex psychological elements in the enjoyment of smoking that aren't explicitly mechanical.

that's true. And some people won't touch those and some people some how don't enjoy those. Just like food sometimes just simply eating something with zero fan fare is the most enjoyable thing to do. It seems like the mantra of pipe smoking really is "your mileage may vary".

The OP has a keen grasp of the obvious. Not that it needed to be proven. We all know due to personl experience.

It should go without saying that the more of the senses we satisfy the more enjoyable the experience. Pipes, automobiles, food, everything. But, when someone newly stumbles onto this scientific fact ... it must be repeated, often!

Some men find extra pounds, oversized noses or, whatever, attractive. To each his own!

To some degree... but also as soon as the presentation becomes obvious or we become aware of it, the spell is broken.

The first time I see a beautiful woman all decked out, hose, dress, heels, wowser... the next time I see her I want her in my old sweat pants and tshirt with her hair in a ponytail. And, never ever have I been attracted to a woman's perfume. I've never smelled one that I liked at all.

I’ve dropped a few favorite, but inexpensive, great smokers only to watch in horror as the stem broke off.

To answer the OP, no amount of Pipe Witchery can trick my tastebuds. As long as it’s drilled properly and the material it’s made of wasn’t carved from a tuna boat, it has the potential to be a..... pipe.
