Well Hello,

I am new, but get getting really into pipe smoking.

All i have smoked to this day is captain black, and my very own homemade pipe.

What would you recommend on my first tobacco that doesn't taste like Windex?

I Think i may like stronger blends, because i love the smell of my uncles cigars.

But im not sure because smell and taste are way different.

Or is it all just preference?

Thanks :)

Nothing to it, but to do it. Smoke 'em all! For English, My favorites are Black House, Magnum Opus, Penzance and Frog on the Bayou right now. For Aros, it's probably 1-Q, Altadis Creme Brulee, P&C Fusion Labs Carmel Apple Pie, Nat Sherman Riverside Whiskey and 7 Seas Royal. Everyone has their own taste. :puffy:

Welcome, and you said it all on the bottom line... It is all just preference. Everybody has a favorite, only advice I will offer is to stop by your local tobacco store and get a bunch of things to sample. If your don't have a local store try one of the sponsors here, like pipesandcigars, and get a sampler to see what your taste buds like. Enjoy the hunt for THE tobacco for you.

The original Frog Morton is a tasty, mild, cool burning treat that is easy on the taste buds and the tongue but is full of flavor. AJs Vaper by Hearth and Home is also a cool burning, light and tasty treat. Really, it all boils down to what Baron said. Different people are going to have different tastes, and it all really boils down to what you want to try. Aros, Englishes, Virginias, Burleys, Periques, or Orientals. Give them all a try!

"tobacco that doesn't taste like Windex"... what a PERFECT description!!
These are just my personal preferences...
Cornell & Diehl, GL Pease, McClelland, and Hearth and Home are all excellent, top-shelf blenders who use the highest quality leaf. The same goes for Dunhill, Gawith, Rattray's and Ashton.
Stokkebye and MacBaren are also very highly regarded, but are a bit too "sugar fortified" for my tastes.
Sutliff blends are a level lower in quality (in my opinion) but are less expense.
Lane and Altadis are another rung down, but again are cheaper.
Finally there are the drugstore blends; Captain Black, Half and Half, Sir Walter Raleigh, Prince Albert, etc. All have their admirers and all are dirt cheap, but are generally filled with flavorings, additives to extend shelf life and the the tobacco itself is generally of lesser quality.
Personally I'm a fan of McClelland's Celebrated Sovereign, Blue Mountain, and Arcadia. As another Forum member likes to say, smoke the best tobacco you can afford.
So what does your home-made pipe look like?

I'd listen to Baron. I've had about 2/3 of the ones he's listed and all are amazing. I haven't had any of the ones Bigvan mentioned so I can't say on that. Before you do that though, I'd recommend just getting one (a sample if you can) of something that has latakia in it to make sure it's something you'll like before purchasing a lot. GLP Key Largo and Jackknife Plug are 2 others I would add to the list. Both have extremely nice flavors. But, as with anyting, these are just opinions. You'll have to really get in there and try them out before you'll know for sure what you like. I'd maybe get a sampling of each kind of tobacco. You can do Orlik Gold for a cheap but good Virginia flake. A lot of people like Mac Baren stuff but it tears my mouth up so I avoid it. But it's cheap and tastes pretty good so those could be good places to start if you don't want to spend much money but want to experience a variety. Once you kind of know what styles you like you can come back here and request the best of those styles and get more recommendations than you can shake a stick at ;)

Talk to an expert. If you can go to a B&M (brick & mortar) tobacco shop, they probably can give good advice. If the shop sells mostly cigaretts, don't bother. Or contact one of the sponsers on the lower left side of the screen. Tell them what you like, taste, smell etc. Then ask for suggestions for 3-4 different blends from different styles. Don't get 4 cherry blends. Get an oz or two of an English, an aromatic, a Virginia etc blend. Try them for a while and then you will be able to start to have a more developed opinion. Eventually, you will be able to give inteligent advice to new people. I have not got to that stage yet.

I've never tasted windex...
Get some Shortcut To Mushrooms. It changed my life.
Smooth, creamy, thick, tastes like a creamy warm beer. So hard to describe. Shroomy creamy earthy heaven. :puffy: (placing an order as we speak)

Shortcut to Mushrooms is very good.
Papaskittles, look at tobaccoreviews.com and also, do some reading in the Tobacco Discussion forum here.
The stronger tobaccos I've tried that I consider keepers are:
Esoterica Penzance

Hearth and Home - Larry's Blend

Seattle Pipe Club - Plum Pudding

Sherlock Holmes Pipe Club - Great Hiatus
and if you need a variation to give your tongue a break from the stronger stuff, I recommend
Lane Limited - 1Q

MacBaren's 7 Seas Royal Blend
I got the ideas for buying all of the above tobacco's (including Shortcut to Mushrooms) from this forum. I read and took note of which ones most people agreed were good, and bought'em. It was a 100% smart move

A number of the sponsors here have sampler packages of one sort or another. I would suggest making your way through some of them until you find several you like. I would agree with the suggestions above. Shortcut to Mushrooms is my favorite, but there are many others to try along the way. The Frog Morton series is also a good starting point. I agree with baron to not be put off by the tin aroma. Some of the worst smelling ones taste great.

Alright :)

Just got to start experimenting i guess, Aha

And no, we don't have a tobacco shop here in my little town in Alaska :/

I don't know why, but i have a "Hunch"? Almost a feeling that i know i like the Frog Morton's.

Its probably the artwork, as i know nothing about the tobacco.

Ill probably be buying a tin of the original and some form of aromatic.
And i swear under pain of death that capn black is a mixture of:

30% things from ashtrays

10% cigarette tobacco

10% vanilla extract

and 50% "We do Not wish to give up our recipe at this time, thank you" Aka. Who knows what.. Probably the grass you find on the bottom of a lawnmower then spray painted it another color.

Frog Morton's and middle earth... Good start papaskittles... Good start.
I personally seem to have a problem with Lady Latakia so I just traded my frog Morton on the town. Others here love it. So I encourage to experiment until you find what you like. Overall a lot of people have recommended 1-Q to me and I have a large jar of it. Just as a standby. You may want to consider that as I've heard it compared to captain black but without the "Windex" I have come to like it as a regular smoke and carry it in my pouch.
Or is it all just preference ?
Actually, it is.
Enjoy them when they come in ! :puffpipe:
