It's a Jock MacGregor billiard straight. I got it in a lot of six pipes that came with a cool humidor I bought on Ebay. I really wasn't expecting much out of the pipes that came with the humidor. But this one is great. I cleaned and polished it up (with my dremel). It still has a little bit of green paint on the bowl from someone elses accidental coloration. It smokes like a dream. But it has the weirdst metal piece in the stem that screws in to the shank. Does anyone know what purpose that would serve? I know pictures would be helpful but I can't get pictures to upload to my computer. Just wanted to share my bliss at my recent acquisition.

I had a Grabow marketed as an L.L. Bean Freeport Maine pipe that had a stinger. It was

a nice sturdy pot, but I think the stinger put the flavor off somewhat. I didn't want to

dismantle the pipe, so I traded it for something that suited me better. I'd been informed

that some Parkers still have stingers, or have had them. My local independent pipe shop

had them without, but in shapes I didn't need. Then I saw one online and took the

chance, on a Parker poker sandblast black that I really liked, and I won the bet -- no

stinger. People don't like them and tend to pull or saw them out or off. They're supposed

to be moisture traps and filters. I've heard some stinger pipes smoke fine, but mine didn't.

The little Parker smokes great.

I have Kaywoodie from the 1930s that is a great smoker, stinger and all. I have a modern Kaywoodie that I am contemplating cutting the stinger off. If they were great, more pipe makers would use them.
