Finally put on inline hockey skates for a slow circle around the front of the house. I mean, I was good enough to be asked for pick up hockey on occasions back in the days. Thank God for the protections. Hit every pads on me including my helmet as soon as I got up. First thing I noticed was this tremendous lack of strength in my ankles. I had hockey sticks for balance, but they were acting as a crutch. Bam! Down I go again. Surely, I do not suck that much! Bam. I need a better plan on strengthening my ankles first. And more flat surfaces. No, I don't give up easily.

Roller skates are not really a safe alternative to skateboards for someone your age...just sayin'.

But don't mind me...rock on dude! (having a will on file might not be a bad idea though)

I retired from the ice years ago. I've got a couple of friends in their late seventies who still play ice hockey though. "No checking" leagues but, a lot of the guys, 60 year old newboobs can't keep a stick on the ice so, stitches are still badges of honor. These guys play in summer and winter leagues.

Are the boots on roller skates as supportive as top-line hockey skates? I've no idea.

To get you blading sooner, Do some toe-raises, body weight squats, and while you’re already squatting put your hands on your knees and rotate your knees clockwise, and some counterclockwise. I occasionally rollerblade and I know what you mean about the ankles feeling weak. Thankfully it goes away after a few consecutive rides.

When I was younger, I could jam a roller rink, backwards, jumps, etc. so, when my girls reached the 12-14 range, I took them skating. And yeh, I skated too, once... I woke up the next day and couldn’t put any weight on my ankles for a week. Skating takes strong ankles for sure.
I was quite the quad skater myself in my day. Fast forward over 20 years -
A friend talked me in to going to the rink one afternoon. This was late 2019.

Damn near broke my ass just trying to get my bearings on those things. Once it started to come back to me I did ok. Only ate shit once.

The following day (and the subsequent 3-4 days) I was so sore I could barely walk. Really put some things in perspective for me.

I think the ankles weren't getting enough support. Will try locking it in tighter tomorrow. If that doesn't work, I'll take my boots to get baked in at a shop.

If your skates don't look like you are simply wearing boots, i.e. straight up and down and in line with your shins vs the broken ankle angle (legs straight down, and skates at a 45 degree outward angle)...then you definitely want to build up some strength in your ankles before you skate again. Also check the boots. If they aren't stiff as a board then you run the risk of ankle injures.

I just retired from ice. I couldn't take the 10:45pm start times. I wouldn't get home until 1:30-3:00 depending on the parking lot beers. It made for 6am wake-ups for work miserable. I miss it something fierce though.

Skates? You mean those gadgets with wheels?

I have one of my S-92 pilots set me on top of one of these then zip down it at over 100mph on actual skis---every day before breakfast---just to get my day started:

You guys made me laugh out loud at with all of the similar responses! I think we all come to a point of time in our life when our minds think we can still do the things we did when we were 20, but our bodies say, "Not a snowball's chance in hell."

I actually had this conversation with my 18 year old earlier this year. He had the choice to attend either a football camp for 2 days, or a golf camp for a week. He wanted to go to football camp, his golf coach and I wanted him to go to the golf camp. I had to break the news to him that there comes a point in time, relatively early in life, that your body won't let you play football anymore, but at least with golf you can play that for most if not all of your life. Good thing he went to the golf camp, it helped him get a spot on the college he is attending's team next fall.

Not exactly the best boots. Bauer Vapor X3.5 inline. Rather stiff. Definitely better than Bauer Classic 100 I used to skate with back in 90s. Should serve my purpose for awhile. But I'll try different lacing before getting it baked. Always wanted to skate well. It was one thing my father was very good at, and tried to teach me. Wasn't all that bad in 90s, but oh well. Not that young anymore. lol

I still play. Lucky to have found a league that plays sundays at 630. To get more time on the ice I recently obtained my ref certification. Now I have to decline ice time or else I could be on skates every weekend all day. 62 years young

If you don't have them, try wax laces. They pull tight and hold tight. Just watch out for a different kind of tongue bite...not kidding, lace bite or skate tongue bite sucks. Basically it pinches the tendons from the top of your foot to your leg that allow you to lift your foot.

For skates, I was a CCM guy..sticks, I was Bauer. I had an older pair of 1052s that I converted into rollerblades back maybe about 15-20 yrs ago. I played roller hockey for a few years, but ice is/was king. At my peak, I was playing on 4 different teams and playing 3-4 times a week. Aside from high school, it was the best condition I was ever in.

Nice...we used to have an old timer on our team that was in his late 50s, early 60s. Great guy. We used to rib him all the time...hey Ralf, what was Moses like? Hey Ralf, what did you play before hockey was invented? Ahhh, good times!
