I'm new back to pipes in the last year and have tried a few mild tobaccos and got on really fine with a Kendal Black Cherry, I'm driving to the tobacconist in the next city at the weekend and was aiming to buy a Peterson Sweet Killarney because it's got good reviews plus it's got a fine room odour but i'm wanting to move up from those very mild blends to something a little deeper, maybe off aromatics. I am also very conscious that I don't want the smell of my smoke to be of burning oily rags. Any advice welcome...

From the sounds of it you are not looking to try Latakia blends, because that's where a lot of that odor comes from. You might want to try a good Virginia or a non aromatic Burley blend. Pipesandcigars.com blend Butternut Burley is a fine Burley blend that has good flavor and the aroma won't get you kicked out of your house. I don't smoke too many Virginia blends, but a couple of favorites are AJs Vaper and Haddos Delight. Lots flavor and non aromatic but they can smoke hot, so be careful. I've also come to find that I really like Carter Hall, a good old fashioned American drugstore blend that has a surprising amount of flavor and also smells quite pleasant. Davidoffs English Mixture is kind of a misnomer in that it is not actually English, but a very high quality aromatic, lightly cased with high quality leaf that has good flavor, but again, it can burn a little hot if you're not careful.

If the tobacconist has a sampler pack where you get several english blends at one package price, you may want to try that. That way you get a small sample of several blends to try.

I would suggest trying DH early morning its a great shift because it is light but still has body. if you do not like that i would suggest trying a black Cavendish it is an aromatic but it has some body.

Maybe some VaPers; Escudo, Rattray's Marlin Flake, SG's St James
Maybe some nice Vs; F&Ts Cut Virginia plug, SG's FVF
Maybe some light English; Dunhill's EMP, MC Froggies

Lot's of good advice here so far, but some of the recommended blends are more likely to be found online than in a B&M. I would check out Mac Baren Scottish Blend and Burley London Blend, which a B&M will probably have. Also, many B&M's carry Stokkebye's bulks; but beyond Luxury Navy Flake and Luxury Twist Flake I wouldn't know what to suggest. Come to think of it, any of the Danish style flakes would probably have that balance of tastiness and gravitas that you're looking for.

My solution: Get better aromatics! www.boswellpipes.com Boswells has the best aromatics money can buy, they will blow away anything you thought was an aromatic and replace it with what one really should be like.
I recomend trying:

Christmass Cookie (very sweet blend, very good flavor), No Bite Delite (Chocolate, caramel, & vanilla blend) & Berry Cobbler (best berry blend ever)
If you really want to try a nice smelling English, McClelland's Frog Morton will do. You could also try Virginia based tobaccos, which will probabley smell better than English, two great ones are McClelland's #24 and Hearth and Home's Annivarsary Kake.
As a certain someone pointed out earlier, all these blends will probabley only be found online, I don't use the tobaccos at my local B&M much because they have almost no selection to speak of (they are more of a cigar store, just starting to branch into pipe tobacco).

I echo what SmokingDragon said. And there's some online retailers in the UK as well that may be able to offer you some sampler packs.
Many B&M's will carry My Mixture 965 or a variant thereof. But it's pretty full bodied and not necessarily mild. Ask your tobacconist for something like a "Mild Burley" or "Light English". Both of those are Altadis bulk blends that can be easily found here on this side of the pond. But ask for a straight Burley, Virginia or blend of those two without any toppings and they should be able to direct you to something.
Good luck

Hmm. UK. Well, I second the suggestion for the two MacBaren blends mentioned above - Mixture and Burley London. When I was in Scotland in '09 - ad I was in small towns in the western Highlands - I saw MacBaren even in grocery stores, so you should have no trouble getting it. They have several blends you could try that are not aros. Try Navy Flake or HH Mature Virginia.

If you can get Peterson's blends, which you also mentioned, try Sherlock Holmes,or maybe University Flake or Irish Flake. The latter has quite a bit of nicotine,so tread carefully.

If Dunhill is available, try their Flake. If you can get Samuel Gawaith, try their Best Brown Flake.

Beyond that, talk to your tobacconist.

And good on you for wanting to move beyond aromatics! Aros are just one small part of the tobacco world. Lots of us started with aros - some never smoke anything else - and some of us happily leave them behind. If I never smoked another aro,I would not be saddened. :puffy:

Jud! I've been a tobacco purist / natural tobacco snob all my life, and I'm just now discovering aro's!

Not the cased White Burley's of old, but some of the upscale English and Danish Cavendish and topped blends aren't bad at all

-- for a change of pace, at least. Such is how my life has changed since reading PipesMagazine!

 Next thing ya know, I'll be suckin' 1-Q through a cob!

Being a cigar smoker first, I always assumed English blends so thats what I've been smoking. Did a buy with shaintiques and he sent a little bonus bag of Stokkebye nougat. Well this stuff just smelled like a good dessert so I had to smoke it. What a nice change of pace. I've actually started experimenting with more aromatics. I get my straight tobacco flavors from my cigars so I really enjoy the change and balances out my smoking experience. I've got to get up to Boswells (yes Al I'll give you a buzz when I do :)), as its only an hour and a half away but right now its TOO HOT! So in short, I wouldn't call it "moving up from aromatics", more of a lateral move. Either way, enjoy the ride, its been fun for me so far!! G1

Samuel Gawith navy flake is very nice virginia with a hint of latakia. If you find you like latakia go for squadron leader. SG St james flake is my no1 vaper and I thoroughly recommend it.
