I am trying to find the right taste for me so have have ordered a few different sampler packs, some tinned and some bulk.
What are your thoughts on giving each blend it's due opportunity: do I smoke one tin at a time exclusively or do I jump from tin to tin to compare?

Variety is the spice of life. Don't think I could smoke an entire tin of a blend without getting tongue fatigued. Change it up and you'll more readily notice the differences between the blends and can find what you like and don't like.

Samplers are a great way to figure out your preferences. If you have always leaned towards aromatics, give yourself plenty of time to adjust to different blends. It takes time. I have to say, one of the most easily enjoyable Latakia blend series out there is Frog Morton. It's so easy to love it and become a favorite. The more complex stuff, takes half a tin or bag to like or adjust to it. This is a hobby/habit of relaxation and contemplation.

There's no set rule or style for this. If you are starting out with a pipe and don't have much else on hand, of course open two or three tins and put them in rotation, and see which you prefer. Understand that you might really like some at first but they won't continue to be that pleasing, and others that don't click at first will grow on you. Some may need to be set aside in a jar and tried later. If you know one or two tins might reward aging, you might want to try that, smoking them after six months or a year, but usually this works better later when you have more blends on hand. I wouldn't feel too tied to a sampler as a set. If other blends catch your attention, put them in the rotation and see how they do with the sampler blends. Starting out, keep quantities small, an ounce or two in bulk tobacco, and a tin at a time, even when you find something you really like. Your taste will change and develop and what you think is terrific now may not remain a favorite, and blends that are hard to love at first may suddenly reveal themselves as great. Slow, slow. Let the experiences grow and develop.

Depending on how much/ the variety you smoke, you're probably going to want more pipes if you don't already have quite a few. Otherwise, your pipe may end up tasting like a lot of different things. I highly recommend getting cobs for testing if you're trying a lot of new things. For 5 bucks, it's an effective way to develop your tastes and find your favorites.

I realize now, I didn't even answer the question. When I get new tins, I usually try them all, get a feel for the initial smoke. When I find my favorite, I usually smoke several bowls of it before switching around. Eagerness and being impatient usually have every tin open....just like anything you get that's new :) Just wing it, you will learn by experience how it works out better than can be explained.

Whether or not you just smoke from one tin or several at a time matters more with how many bowls you smoke a day. If you just smoke one or two pipes a day, it doesn't matter. But, if you smoke several a day then I find that smoking different blends throughout the day helps me reflect on taste, allows different taste buds to get used, and compare the differences better. YMMV

I'd recommend being systematic about it, until you find something that intrigues you... then smoke the hell out of it. "The path of excess leads to the palace of wisdom."

YMMV but from my experience, it takes several bowls of most blends to fully appreciate it. On the other hand, variety is important to me as well. So, the compromise may be to open a tin, smoke several bowls or as much as you think it takes for you to get to know it. Then open a second tin and repeat. At this point you might want alternate between open tins.
I would suggest opening no more than a half dozen at a time but I have never been able to follow that advice myself.
Pax.

Only suggestion I can make is to put the bulk tobacco into something that is sealed enough to approximate the seal of tins (see the recent thread about Mason jars that are short and small volume). Otherwise you are comparing apples and oranges, so to speak.
