Hi folks, I recently purchased my first Neerup pipe. It smokes well and I quite like it.

However, it does give off some kinda chemical smell (it is from the surface so I assume it is from the finishes/stains) especially when the bowl gets warm. It is not harsh but definitely noticeable even after about 10 bowls now.

What should I do about it? I am thinking about wiping it with alcohol but I am afraid it will destroy the appearance too. Will it eventually go away given some more time?

here is the pipe:

I got the same stench from a well-known artisan pipemaker's masterpiece. Really strong stuff, man. I would guess that it will eventually go away. However, I couldn't wait that long, and I gave the pipe away. (How ya' doin', Bill? Is that bad boy working out for ya'? [utters demented chuckle and exits stage right])

That smell and taste are why I only buy pipes with naked bowls. The Danish are used to using water glass to blacken their bowls. That shit tastes like crap and smells even worse. Next time sand your bowl clean and get that crap off as soon as you can.

No I have no idea what they use to make water glass. Ask George or Jesse, those guys will know what it is. i knew at one point what was in it, but my memory is totally shot these days.

I think that might explain an experience I recently had. Does it look like tiny little "sparkles' in there with that particular coating? Nasty chemical taste had me pffting like a cat with tape on it's tongue ...

YOU don't want to use alcohol, as alcohol is the primary solvent in most pipe fnishes, and wiping it down with alcohol could ruin or damage the finish.
