It occured to me as my pipe collection grows, perhaps i should buy additional humidors. Right now I have one. Chosing a pipe humidor is as challenging as choosing a pipe- I stay away from humidors made of glass- I like ones with a cork interior, and can hold pipes along the outside. I assume it's important to have one with the glass vial of water on the inside. Is there a best brand of pipe humidor? i noticed they are abundant and cheap on Ebay

I have 2-3 with the glass jar and I only use 1 of them. I bought a curio cabinet and have all of my pipes on small stands on the glass shelves. Then my tobacco is either in tins, or mason jars. Mason jars work best for me because I don't tend to smoke but a few times a week.

I keep coffee candy in my pipe rack/humidor.

It's not really that great for tobacco.

The seal isn't so great.

I prefer and recommend that you invest is a set of bail top canisters.

There are some good ones that are inexpensive and have very good seals.

Since you don't want to go with glass there are some acrylic versions on the market that are quite good.

I love those bail top canisters. Simple and they keep your tobacco very well. I'm a big fan of the glass as there's just something about seeing your tobacco sitting in them that makes it look so darn appetizing.

If glass is good, Ill go with that-I have a number of those clear glass containers pictured above, but used them for dried food (pasta, etc)

Ill go with whatever works the best. Mabey ill use the airtight cobalt blue containers

Now you're talking. People who are into natural things like drinking spring water, use blue glass jars for the water, as the plastic does leech into whatever is in the jar, and if you sit tap water out in the sun in a blue jar, it supposedly will purify it and evaporate/eliminate the chlorine in it too. What kind of blue jars are you going to buy? Pictures please?

I have these airtight jars al around the house, and never occoured to me they would make good humidors for my pipe tobbacco. Shouldn't I put some kind of vial with water in each jar to make sure the tobacco doesn't dry out? Thanks for the idea! If I keep it in a clear jar, does exposure to light effect the tobacco?

The 2 big blue ones are 10 inches high.

See Bob's articles to the left of this screen--he has a ton of good info on this topic.

I prefer ball mason jars with 2-piece lids for long-term storage; i'm welsh and canning is in our blood. If you're going to store anything long-term, then get glass that's labeled 'hermetic'--this means it will make a true airtight seal. Also for long-term, you should BOIL them for 20 minutes. That comes straight from my mom, and I'm not questioning her expertise.

I have a pile of Fido brand bail-top jars as well, for the stuff I'm accessing more frequently--they're a little pricey, but are food-grade hermetic seal jars; if i'm going to keep spending between 10-60 dollars on a tin of tobacco, it's going to be well-taken care of.

I recall Bob saying that 12-18% RH was ideal for stored tobacco, and then you can dry it out to your taste just prior to smoking.

Thanks romeowood, Ill check out that info.

My clear container in the right of the picture reads 'hermetic' on the top, & all have rubber gaskets so have an airtight seal- I cant wait to fill them all to the top with tobacco.

Question is- will exposure to light have any effect on the tobacco?

Here is an idea for those that might have open tins sitting around and you don't want to jar them up yet.... Get some 50 cal. Ammo Cans! The are huge and airtight... I can fit about 6 tins in each one!

@ Bubba.. I was wondering if anyone on here was ever going to post about ammo cans for useage.

If I buy pipe tobacco in a pouch, sealed or not... and I know it's not going to be opened for a fairly long time, I have .50 cal ammo cans that I keep it in. I ahve at least 4 of them. they measure - 20" long x 8" wide and 14"deep. they are harder to come by than the usual smaller ones that I've got in two sizes.
