How long should a proper packed bowl last you? I have been reading that you shouldn't smoke like a train to avoid tong bite and damaging your briar. I am just curios how long a bowl last for the old timers. Also, is it ok to leave a half smoked bowl in your briar for a couple of hours?what the threshold?

How long a bowl lasts depends on a lot of things. The size of the pipe, how often you puff on it, the tobacco. On average a bowl lasts me about an hour, it goes out 2 or 3 times, depending on what I'm doing. When I'm reading it will go a lot longer. As far as leaving a bit in the bowl to finish later, I see no reason not to, I have.

For me I also find that a bowl usually does last me about an hour. I find that if I really take the time to pack my bowl properly and get myself to sit back & relax while enjoying my bowl I even go longer than an hour. I always enjoy smoking my pipe so much that I never leave it half smoked but I would'nt see any problem doing it if I had to.

For me, its usually not having enough time to finish! I have gotten a good technique down and a bowl will probably go at least an hour to an hour and a half. I usually can't devote that much time but wish I could.

About an hour give or take for me! I will leave half a bowl and finish it later if I'm at work.

For me it's highly variable.

Sometimes I like a short smoke 10-15 minutes but will come back to it later.

On average 45 minutes to an hour.

Then when I'm in the mood to "go slow" 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 hours rarely longer..... :crying:

I have different sizes of pipes. But I puff pretty quickly compared to others, and am usually done in 30 minutes even if it's a large pipe.

It seems like anymore I can get a good 45 minutes out of just bout anything. I have gone up to an hour and a half but that doesnt happen too often.

Depends on what pipe I am smoking.. Some are about 30 to 45 min up to 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours.. I mostly smoke estate freehands with larger (cavernous) chambers. I do have several smaller pipes that I smoke when I don't have time to sit down and enjoy...

Because I had a hard time putting down a half-done bowl, I eventually gravitated toward smaller pipes. That way, I could smoke nice and slow, but I didn't have to worry about running out of time.
I save the big bowls for late at night.

Most of my pipes are of an average sized bowl and they last me in the neighborhood of forty-five mintues to an hour on average. My Nording, which is definitely on the larger side, can last closer to an hour and a half or sometimes two hours depending on the blend.
As for leaving a bit unsmoked for later, if not already mentioned, it's called delayed tobacco gratification or dtg and is perfectly normal.

I generally smoke a group 5 sized pipe with either Virginia or Virginia/Perique flakes. It takes me about an hour and a half to finish a bowl. Unless something interrupts me, I do not put the bowl down and finish it later. My group 6 pipes can take a good 2 hours plus to finish.

I smoke faster than people say you should, but I like it that way. I have to smoke slowly to get more than 35 minutes from most pipes.

One major variable not yet mentioned rests with the tobacco blend. I find that English blends tend to last about twice as long as aromatics. This has been a consistent result over a lot of experimentation.
