I was puffing away tonight and that question popped in my head. About how long should one hold the smoke in the mouth? I'm sure it's up to personal preference, but I'm just curious as to what everyone does.
With me, I just blow it back out as soon as I have the volume of smoke that I want. Sometimes, I close off the back of my throat, let the smoke roll around in my mouth for a second or two, then blow it out. I get the best flavor out of Virginias doing it this way, or so it seems to me anyway.
Most of the time I just blow it out, but if I'm trying something for the first time, I tend to hold onto it a little longer trying to pick up on all the subtleties of the tobacco.
In an effort to "not" inhale, I will draw then close my mouth and without inhaling I push the smoke through my nose.
A kind of reverse French inhale. Sometimes it burns a little, but with practice you can detect nuances within the smoke that one cannot get from just puffing.
But, as for the time factor, it's usually only a second or two and the longest.
Marc has the right idea. Pipe smoking should become a natural part of your respiration process. Sip the smoke. Exhale through mouth or pass it through the sinus passages. If you're thinking about what you're doing, you're doing it wrong. Relax and just let it happen.
I take a long drag and hold my breath until I can hop into my car, drive down to my local eatery that USED to have a smoking section, walk in, blow out all of my smoke into the faces of the locals who kept on supporting the stupid ban on smoking inside ALL public areas in San Antonio, and then go back to my home and enjoy the rest of my bowl and continue with regular 1-2 seconds puffs.
I believe this is called a Delayed Gratification Technique yes?
I keep the pipe in my mouth most the time which results in a rotational system of sort with a little 'reservoir'.
I draw a full mouth-full in the first time and hold it a moment (this is after getting it lit to my satisfaction), then pushing most of it out the nasal passage -- but not all of it leaves. Then as I slowly sip at it every couple of breathes or so, I naturally let small amounts leave with each breath. This results in some coming in every few breathes and less than that going out -every- breath, and naturally some being left over at the end. Sooner or later this results in a saliva and smoke build-up that makes me take it out of my mouth for a moment and start the cycle over.
So --- technically? I imagine some very small portion of the initial mouthful might last the full 5 minutes or so each cycle takes.
I do the same as Lawrence... At times I just let it "roll" out of my mouth... Or if it's a new blend, I will inhale through my nose, while the tobacco is rolling from my mouth ever so slowly
