Uh, I just checked on a couple of tins that I have left opened without storing in mason jars and I think I kinda pushed it. A couple are really dry. In my limited experience it seems to me that some I can leave longer then others. But what do you guys think is a good rule of thumb? Don't leave a tin opened for more then???? Then aeros and others might have different rules??

It is probably best to transfer into a jar with a tight fitting lid after you open the tin . For now get a bowl and place the tobacco inside . Cover with a damp towel and go to bed . When you get up transfer into a ziplock or a glass jar .

i have had tobacco stay in the tins for a month or more without problems. The aromatics stay moist longer than the English blends i have had.

Peterson Sunset Breeze can take a long time to dry up . As long as the tin does not get hidden from view .The drieness adds to the smoke itself,at least in my case . Phillip is right on target with the English blends though .They lose something if left out too long .

I have a tin of Balkan Sasieni that has been opened for the better part of 8 months. It is a little on the crispy side but it is still smokable. In all actuality, being as dry as it is makes it taste a little better in my opinion. I try not to leave a tin open for more than 30 or 4 months at a time, but doing it this way doesnt really make a whole lot of difference to me as far as taste/freshness. It is one of those things, like many things with this hobby, in which YMMV.

I always have a few tins open and try to get through them without opening others, (hard to do). I always put the lid back on, and then I put the tin in a zip lock bag and I've had some baccy good for months this way. The ziplock acts as a back up for the loss of seal on the lid. This way I don't have to use so many jars for storing, just my opinion. It also drys it out a bit, but not too quick, better for smoking. Especially SG FVF and Penzance I found this method worked great.

I do something similar. I got a stack of the cheap Ziplock plastic containers at the local dollar store. If the tin is open and not my daily smoke, I put it in a plastic container. It seems to hold the moisture in the tin a little bit better and it makes them easy to stack. I've had open tins for over 6 months without issue.
But I try not to have more than 4 to 6 tins open at the same time (right now it's 5 open tins, 1 in my travel bag, 4 in a plastic container on my shelf).

It seems that when I get to around half a tin, it's best to jar. After that, I find, with more air in the tin, the rate the tobacco seems to dry faster.
Some blends I smoke fast enough that jarring doesn't seem worth the effort and then some insulated "coffee can" tins don't need jarring at all. I guess it really depends on the tobacco itself.
Interesting thread.

I smoke one or two pipes a day, and have two or three tins (usually McClellands, w/ the plastic lids) open at a time. I've never had the need to jar any of these, as they get smoked before they get stale.
