I stumble on to this very rarely... Pronounced char on the exterior of the bowl, sometimes on the stem. I always wonder how this happens. Bored pipe smoker touching the exterior of their pie with a lighter/match over time? Theories? This happens to be a 1906 WDC Columbia Class pipe...

Could be lighting it off an oil or gas lamp or other similarly large open flame.

I am curious if you plan on trying to restore the surface and if so how you plan to go about it with the inlay of the class year. If so I hope you post your progress to watch how it goes.

I don't know about the timeframe but I used to read that folks lit their pipes at gas lamps outside of buildings. That or a gas stove would certainly be an inexact enough application of fire to result in something like this.
