I have been smoking a pipe for a few years now and I retrohale. I would like to start clenching while driving, reading, or working on the computer and I can't seem to retrohale while clenching. To be clear, I can, a tiny bit but most of it goes out through the pipe.
Is it possible? Is there a trick or a technique to use?

Push your tongue against the roof of your mouth to keep from blowing the smoke into the pipe.

What Chasingembers said. I also will retohale while pushing a bit of smoke back through the pipe and my nose at the same time.

I never thought about it but I just did it while listening to Eno. Maybe you should try that..... JK what Duane said seems to be the key.

Thanks for this info. I have tried using my tongue to close off the stem but that tends to get things a bit damp. I'll give this a shot. It also seems a more natural action than hunting around for the stem.

No trick, really. It's just something that seems to become natural with time.
If your vehicle has airbags, you may not want to clench while driving. No one looks good with a pipe stem jutting out of the back of their neck.

THIS..... Or block the stem with your tongue.
Either way, don't be too worried about blowing a little air through the stem. Look up "breath smoking" on YouTube. The technique actually advocates lightly exhaling into the bowl during your smoking cadence. I've found that it doesn't cause any excess moisture issues and actually helps keep the pipe lit and reduce relights.

I've never had to think about it..kinda just comes naturally.
Years of cigarette smoking were good for something I guess.

Funny, never thought about it. I just pull the smoke to the back of my mouth and push it out through my nose. I'll have to see if I'm blocking with my tongue as I'm not really conscious about it.
Exactly. Perhaps just swallow after the draw, that should cause the smoke to travel out your nostrils?
