I’ve always been interested in how other people choose their end of night combo. Do you pair a tobacco to a drink or a drink to a tobacco? When it comes to wine I’ll always pair it with what I’m eating. But usually I’ll pair my tobacco to what I’m drinking at the end if the night. What is your preference? And what are some of your favorite pairings?

It depends on which strikes me first.

If I've got a particular drink in mind I'll choose a blend to go with it. If I've got a particular blend in mind I'll choose a drink to go with it.

Whatever I happen to be drinking at the time or nothing at all. Too much overthinking kills the pipe enjoyment for me.

I usually drink a glass of Scotch along side my pipe. I typically open up the tobacco cabinet and grab a blend that draws me most at that point in time.

I mostly already know what I feel like before I open the cabinet. I then just grab a Scotch that I feel like or that I feel would go well with the tobacco.

Sometimes I do it the other way around or just go with what I’m already drinking. It’s all a pretty organic process with not too much thought involved.

Evening pipe is usually accompanied by some sort of fortified. Usually Port. I keep my pipe smoking as simple as possible, pairing tobacco and booze never crossed my mind. My smoking seems to be best paired to whatever I'm drinking. The opposite is also true.

I'd never drink something I didn't like. I'd never smoke something I didn't like. That's pretty much how I choose what to drink and smoke ... Something I like.

Pairing wines also seemed to be a waste. I like red and couldn't care less about the experts. I do red with fish, mutton, burgers, meat pies, shell fish, anything. I lead a rather uncomplicated life I guess.

I do try not to overpower my meal and save the Chateauneufs and Cabs for heavy red meats. Other than that, sky's the limit.

pairing is like pipe smoking it's about enjoyment. You can go as complicated as you want or as simple, but the basic principle is just increasing enjoyment. I sometimes pair a drinking with a smoke if last time I happened to mix the two they seemed to work exceedingly well then I'll mix them again. Rum goes well with any navy flake I've tried for example.
