Last night I attended the West Georgia Pipe Club, and we were able to sample several of Steven Books' blends. He was generous enough to send several samples of his Wild Rose, Young Master, Grandfather's Own and For Meerschaums only blends. Im going to talk about Wild Rose here.
Wild Rose was the first blend I sampled, and im totally sold on it. The House of Calabash website says it contains three varieties of Turkish, some white burley and a bit of red Virginia. The flavor is light, but you don't have to search for it. On the inhale I get dry cereal tones with a distant background of something floral, with the sensation of mint. Not mint flavor, but the sensation of it. Sort of cooling, almost herbal. All this is very light though, and far from "in your face".
This morning I finished the sample I brought home, about two bowls worth in my Peterson 408. It proved to be an excellent morning smoke as I made some breakfast for my better half and enjoyed a cup of cold coffee. If I feel compelled, I may review the other blends I tried, but Wild Rose really hit the spot for me.
