Hello.
Recently I felt that my pipe getting really hot during smoking.
I'm not inhaling it nor puff it hard. I sip it gently with small terms.
And even I got no tongue bite. So i tried "cheek test" in every minute and i stopped smoking until pipe cool down enough to touch my cheek.
But every time i do that, light goes out, and the smoke comes out from stem very very small i barely see it.
I feel that this is very strange and discomfort. It gets really hot and i cannot hold the bowl.
So is this problem? or not?
Thank you always. :D

If you are sipping gently and not puffing hard, then it must be the packing. Try packing looser than you always do. What kind of tobacco are you smoking?

I'd chime in and say that you need to dry it more and pack it more loosely but I see that horse has been beaten post mortem!
Carry on!

Did anyone mention dying out the tobacco any packing looser?
We don't know anything about the pipe you're using - Is it even made of briar?

I don't know if this has come up, but light packing after letting the tobacco dry seems like a good thing to try.
On a more serious note, some blends just burn hot - Mississippi River being one of them. You really need to rub it well, dry, and pack very loosely...

I got mouth sores from plum pudding and tossed the Mississippi River for fear of all Seattle blends doing the same

Yikes!
Well, rest assured they can smoke fine. Give at least Potlatch a chance.

Thx a lot guys,.I forgot to check.

Firstly, my pipe is stanwell Vario 140 and I'm smoking my mixture 95 and early morning pipe.

I'm smoking right now under the bridge beside a stream.

And yeah, those tobacco seems have some moisture. I'm gonna give them a time to dry and pack it more loosely next time.

Appreciate all your kind advise!
Ah damn a ant bite me while writing this hah

I have several pipes (including a Dunghill) that no matter how well I dry my baccy and pack the bowl still burn hot with gentle sipping. I just think it is the way with some pipes.
Obviously a thin walled pipe will have a tendency to burn hot but of mine that do none are particularly thin walled.
One of life's mysteries methinks

Jay.
