After reading on the forums here of the need to rotate your pipes, to let them rest, I started my collection with the first pipe I bought, which was a basket pipe from the B&M, and five Dr Grabows. The Grabows all seem to get very hot to the touch while the basket no name does not. Has anyone else had a similar experience or is this more a case of operator error.

I have a hot smoking Dr. Grabow Savoy, but it's the only one of the 8 DG's I own that does. Funny you mention the basket pipe being a cool smoker. My best smoker is a no-name billiard I gave 2.95 for in unsmoked condition. I guess ya just never really know which are going to rock. I know this wont help a whole lot, but maybe you smoke too fast/hot and the basket pipe is just an exceptional hunk of Briar.

The link above is an great article about finding a pipe shape that fits your smoking style. The hotter you smoke the thicker your pipe shape. I smoke hot so I like the Bulldog and apple shapes. They also feel great in my hand.
What is the shape of your Grabow to your other pipes?
I have several Grabows and the smaller ones for me smoke a lot hotter then my large free hands and omegas.

I sometimes get my Grabows a little hot-but I tend to puff to fast at times. What Grabows do you have?

I had a pipe once that I paid over two hundred for.It smoked so hot that I couldn't hold the bowl.I tried for the longest but it just wouldn't break in.I contacted the factory and returned it to them. They said they couldn't find the problem. They sent me a replacement pipe though. It smokes just great. Some pipes smoke good right from go.Some take a while, and some never do.You just never know about a pipe until you smoke it.

I did some experimenting today and found I was packing way to tight. Still had an ok draw but is was burning like a blowtorch.
Eaglerico thanks for the link and the tip. Actually the one that was not getting hot is a bulldog. The Grabows are 2 Grand Duke billiards a Grand Duke egg(I think) and 2 bents that just say Dr. Grabow. I smoked the egg today at lunch and it was much cooler with a loose pack.

I have a grabow. It smokes a bit hot to the touch but it doesn't really impart that into the flavor. At least I don't think it does.

I have a grabow bulldog. It's an old pipe (father in law gave it to me) and it smokes really hot, even when I make sure to smoke slow. It tastes fine, but sometimes it gets so hot I can barely hold it! An ideas why this is?

My dad who smoked his pipe for years and years always smoked a bulldog type medico or grabow. He never had problems. Always told me you just gotta "play the pipe" so to speak. I never liked that style. Had to always smoke a bent stem. He also told me bowl thickness has a lot to do with it. I dislike one of my grabows because it just smokes bad. I cant get used to it and it roars. Some pipes just suit my style better than others. Thats why we all have our favorites I guess.

I've gotten quite a few DGs last year or two. There's a Starfire that gets hot if I smoke it hard (quick puff'n). I think sometimes it's all in the wood. Not the thickness or the tobacco. It's the wood and your puff'n IMO.

i have several Grabows-- a couple smoke a bit hotter than usual if i push 'em--have a Royalton bent bull that barely gets warm--that pipe has been a pleasure from the first bowl--
