If you go to the B.B.C. UK web site you will see an article which tells us that with some Hospitals around the UK who do not allow smoking, those in charge have finally realised we aint gonna stop if we dont want too. So now they have put up shelters away from none smokers where smokers can do what they where going to do in any case, and that is have a smoke. When are these people going to get it into their heads if we want to smoke we will, its our life. Staying away from non-smokers is a given, I have done that all my smoking life. Johnny

Someone needs to show this to the people that own hospitals and even the malls here in the US. I, for one, never need a smoke more than when I am at the hospital for any reason. And the mall too, actually. Good spot, johnny. Maybe we've reached a turning point for smokers?

This is the rule of thumb at most U.S. hospitals. Many don't have smoking areas any longer; you have to walk across the street.
There was one time when I found myself at the hospital visiting a friend. It was a very difficult time, and I wanted a cigarette. At that point, I didn't care about the rules. I went and smoked one just outside the door, about twenty five feet away to be considerate. I was quickly told, "This is a no smoking area." My response was, "What is your (*&%ing point?"
As I said, it was a rough time. I wasn't in the mood. It was probably the one time in my life I felt good for being mean. It was cathartic.

Most uk hospitals have now an off the property smoking policy which leads to many patients standing on the off site pavement at the front with their various drips and bandages and with many in wheelchairs. A sign at ours says "no smoking, we promote healthy living" Inside are posters for the hospital shop "Grab a Lunch"..a processed sandwich prepared in a factory and transported and stored in the hospital, a bag of high salt, high fat crisps and a bottle of Coke Cola high sugar drink and a chocolate Mars bar, all produced to clog arteries.
If 1st person did as they asked had two of these meals each day for a full year

If the 2nd person smoked on that occasion twice each day for a full year... I do wonder who would be healthier?

The hospital closest to me in Huntsville has a rather nice smoking section but you need a dang map to find it. It is outside and hidden from the street by tons of shrubs and a few small trees. They have it but dont advertise it in any way. I had to follow an employee that had that need a smoke look.

Here's the truth..... I live in Nottingham City, UK. I visit my local Hospital quite regular, due to bone problems. I wouldn't mind taking my pipe and having a smoke but the only problem with that is the area which people do gather for smoking is over crowded.................. With DR's and Nurse's !!!!!! to say its bad for you they sure get through the old coffin nails at a fair old rate, all the stress of being in the medical trade I expect ?

Recently visited a friend in the hospital here in Arkansas... was setting in my truck in the

parking lot, about 200 yards from the entrance. Was told to put out my pipe or leave. A completely

smoke free campus I was told.

Ours has a smoking area located 100 feet away from the building. My boss and I just smoke on the roof. We had a patient leave the grounds and walk to the CVS on the corner in her hospital gown and toting her IV pole to get cigs. The sad part is her nurse didn't even realize she was gone until the store clerk called. Our cafeteria serves deep fried everything and they worry about second hand smoke.

The sad thing is... for us smokers I mean is: No mater how hard they try, the vegetarians will never

have all the cows, pigs and lambs eradicated. The stanch radical anti-smokers will succeed eventually.

Not during my lifetime I don't think, but it'll happen.

It would be nice if common sense would prevail, but judging by what I'm seeing on Facebook lately, it's in short supply. They ought to call it uncommon sense. Just stock up and we can all be outlaws together!

I am hoping the worse case scenario for tobacco products is it will be become a very backroom private thing.
Hiding your stash from plain view in brown paper bags while looking left and right as you leave the tobacconist.
(think porn shops in the 60s-70s)

Wow, I remember when you could smoke everywhere. I remember being in the grocery store when I was a kid and it seemed like everyone smoked. Now smokers are made to feel like lepors in biblical times. I understand to an extent because I don't like cig smoke in my face, but i just think that its getting ridiculous. In one country, i read this here, But the smoking age is a certain year and its never going to change. so if you were born before that date it will never be legal for you to smoke.

Most uk hospital sites are no smoking. This usually only applies to staff as patients have designated areas. Staff are not supposed to smoke in uniform on the grounds, staff can be disciplined for smoking on work time under local policies. Also as a smoker I am classed as having "a behavioural problem" which will result in slower healing.
I don't think the building of shelters is a win fr smokers as we are all viewed negatively, step by step and year by year it is becoming more socially unacceptable. The uk have just finished a few consultations on smoking and ways to stop it spreading. They are targeting younger people with the hope that smoking will die out as current smokers pass on.

When my family was at the cancer clinic to hear from the doctor regarding my dads cancer, we were in the hardest times of our lives, after hearing from the doctor my dad and I stepped into the parking lot to smoke, while we were still drying our eyes, a person from the hospital said, 'You're gonna have to step off the grounds and smoke" I explained the situation to him and said, my dad and I are gonna stay here and smoke, If you don't like it, you can call the police. He walked away and we were never bothered for our time there again.
The hospital can be a very stressful place as in our case, and it can be filled with joy as in the maternity ward. they should have smoking areas, maybe not in front of the door, but elsewhere where one can de-stress from hearing such bad news...or just smoke to be proud his child was born.
maybe this hospital can sell KAISER pipes!!

the hospital group I worked for has zero smoking (tobacco use) on any of the hospital grounds. including sitting in your car during your lunch hour. folks had taken to parking off campus on the nearby neighborhood streets. the catch to that was none of the professional (nurses, etc) were allow to leave campus during their shifts. us IT/Network guys were always out driving between hospitals and knew every little machine room so it really didn't bother us much.

No smoking in US hospitals too. Applies to everyone except my former hospital roommate, who got away with smoking something (green) every 3 hours. I couldn't smoke, I was on oxygen.
