I posted about this here, but thought I would make a new post as well.
Many of you may be familiar with the idea of coating the inside of a new pipe bowl with a thin layer of honey as a way to help break-in the pipe. The idea is that the honey will carbonize, and help the tobacco ash stick to the inside of the bowl to more quickly form a cake.
This was recommended by pipe maker Bob Swanson of Perry White Pipes during his seminar at the West Coast Pipe Show.
It is also recommended by Dunhill in the pamphlets that came with 3 new Dunhill Pipes I bought a couple of years ago.
I was out of honey recently, so I tried real Maple Syrup and have been enjoying the results. It does make everything taste sweeter and I like it, especially with a smoky Latakia blend. I've only done this with one pipe as I do need pipes that will give me the truer taste for doing tobacco reviews.

Well, your posts haven't done a thing to edify my pipe smoking experience, but

I do think I'm gonna go in the kitchen and make myself some pancakes.
.

Tell me, do you stack them, fold them, or rub them out?

I use maple syrup as opposed to honey myself; and to add to the manufacturers that recommend it, Brigham literature also suggests maple syrup over honey. Its also handy when breaking in a new cob, let some soak into the protruding shank and then dry, kills some of the burning pine flavour.

I suggest breaking in the pipe with Maple Street tobacco. Some of the reviews describe it as smoking a plate of pancakes. That should make everyone happy.
Seriously, I just load and smoke. If the pipe starts to feel warm, smoke slower. If it gets cold, relight.

As I said in another thread ... Just to clarify, for the most part, I just smoke my pipes. It is the rare occasion that I use the honey or maple syrup coating method, or any other procedure. I've done it on about 4 - 5 of 60 pipes I own.

I don't use anything to break in a new pipe. I jujst smoke the first few bowls using 5 Brothers tobacco and it usually puts the beginning of a nice cake in the bowl.

Like Strong Irish, all I do is load a pipe and smoke it. I also sand out any coating in briars I get, and don't let cake build. More proof that whatever works for you is what you should do.
