I posted about this here, but thought I would make a new post as well.
Many of you may be familiar with the idea of coating the inside of a new pipe bowl with a thin layer of honey as a way to help break-in the pipe. The idea is that the honey will carbonize, and help the tobacco ash stick to the inside of the bowl to more quickly form a cake.
This was recommended by pipe maker Bob Swanson of Perry White Pipes during his seminar at the West Coast Pipe Show.
It is also recommended by Dunhill in the pamphlets that came with 3 new Dunhill Pipes I bought a couple of years ago.
I was out of honey recently, so I tried real Maple Syrup and have been enjoying the results. It does make everything taste sweeter and I like it, especially with a smoky Latakia blend. I've only done this with one pipe as I do need pipes that will give me the truer taste for doing tobacco reviews.
