Having recently used the "Forever Stem" from my CobWarden on my Freehand, I needed to figure out what to do with the stummel from my favorite cob that I had leftover. This specific cob was the second pipe I owned, and my first cob, so there was some emotional attachment to it that kept me from simply throwing it away and moving on.
I have been admiring some of SmokingDragon's work with bamboo stems, and thought I would take a walk down one of my favorite riverside hiking trails to collect some River Cane (a species of Bamboo native to OK and TX) and see what I could come up with.
I tried a few different pieces, but nothing seemed "right". I had one piece that was cut close to the root system, so it had an interesting series of bumps along the joints where roots used to be. The way it looked made me think it would look great with Sinew wrapped around it, and somehow that gave me the idea.
I have been wanting a Bavarian style pipe ever since I started smoking pipes. I had a stem piece left over from the pre-drilled kit I used recently which would be PERFECT after heating and bending it. So here is what I ended up with.

Cob bowl, River Cane stem, Sinew wrapped on the bottom where the stummel meets, 550 Paracord above that.

Here you can see the Sinew wrap. I "could" have wrapped it a bit nicer, but half the draw to Sinew to me is the primitive look, and a rough wrap compliments that look nicely I find. Also, you can see the "root bumps" on this piece at the joints.

Not quite as sophisticated as some pipes I suppose, but it is unique. What do you guys think?

Does it disassemble in any form to facilitate cleaning?

Well, yes and no... mostly no. 8)

I can get a pipe cleaner in through the bowl to clean the shank though, and the stem comes off the river cane so I can clean it with my churchwarden pipe cleaners.
(EDIT TO ADD)

WOOT! 200 posts!

I looks like you would have to clean it with like 5+ cleaners all bundled up to hit the walls inside of the cane. Does it work with just 1 cleaner?
That's damn nifty sir.
I applaud your McGyverism!

I don't know honestly, I just finished it and haven't even had my first bowl in it yet. It is a bit wide on the inside, so I may resort to using a 9mm barrel cleaning brush if bending a loop in a pipe cleaner doesn't work. Good thing I have a few on hand. 8)

Awesome job. As an Okie I will be on the lookout for some of that cane to do a cob upgrade myself.
So at the joint you just drilled the cane and inserted the cob's wooden stem?

"Out of The Box" thinking. Just think of the different

variations you can do.

Yessir, just wrapped the cane in duct tape to keep the wood from splitting while drilling, and drilled into it at the angle I wanted the shank to enter. The shank on this one is the same that came on it from MM, but the next one I make I think I'm going to try replacing the shank with cane as well and leaving more of it visible.
Thanks for the compliments guys, SmokingDragon gave me the idea though, it wasn't a very big leap from what he does to what I came up with. I consider this a "forum inspired" pipe.
