I have to say that I have really been enjoying the home grown Va @cosmicfolklore grew.
If you've had some heirloom produce or meat you can get a great idea of the leaf he grew. It's not for everyone but it's got qualities that are lost in many contemporary blends and leafs. It has fruit notes that I don't get from any commercial product. The closest thing I could get to it with a blend would be a VA with a hefty pinch of burly. That's not really it at all but it's ballpark. Like it's a bit more robust and hearty then a typical Va.
So long story short. Certainly grow some if you have the chance. Not trying homegrown tobacco is like never trying a style of pipe tobacco ever.

I had floated the idea of starting a vacation resort for pipesmokers a few years ago. I had an opportunity to buy and develop an area just outside Mars Hill, NC, where tobacco is still grown. Set up a few nice cabin rentals, and have some specialized crops grown there to make several small batch blends, grown where guys can just walk out and see the tobacco plants, and the barns, etc… maybe a small pipe shop set up in an old fashioned general store style. But, the thread just went off the rails with people hung up on the word “quality” and “premium” tobacco. Ha ha. So, I wrote that off.

But, I do encourage folks to try their hand at growing tobacco. Start with an easy to cure burley, then after you get some experience start planning to try flu curing, maybe even fire curing later on. It does take patience. Your best/earliest smoke will come three years after starting seeds. But, I think you’ll surprise yourself.

I really have been toying with the idea of growing a small batch here in eastern Washington. We have long hot summers, I have eight acres and a barn...

Homegrown is the only pipe tobacco that’s good enough to be outright banned in @jbfrady’s otherwise lawless blend-of-the-year threads puffy
