As you can probably tell by the frequency of my latest reviews, I recently bought some new blends in one big order. I wish I could profess to some intellectual method of choosing said blends, say perhaps based on flake, region, taste profile, etc. The truth, however, is that I just bough some seasonal aromatics and a Norman Rockwell ashtray that came with a tin of Raking Leaves. As if that wasn't "amateur" enough, the last blend I bought was purchased solely based on the fact.....that I liked the picture on the tin and the name of the blend. My shame is immense.

Still, I managed to hit on a winner in Home and Hearth's Slow-Aged First Snow. It comes in one big crumble cake inside the tin. The smell was so very different from the aromatics I normally smoke. At first, it seemed to smell too earthy and "unusual". However, the more I smelled it I found myself becoming intrigued. I eventually lit up a bowl with no expectations, and the first thing that came to mind was "This is weird. It smells like hay and earth". Yet, I didn't stop smoking it. I have since found myself going back to it more and more frequently, so much so, that I am almost out.

It just seems to smell like being outdoors. It reminds me of hay or cut grass, of moist earth, or of just a time when I sat outside in peace. I love that it has a strong and unique smell, but it is not obnoxious smelling or offensive. My wife says she can't decide whether she likes it or doesn't because there's something she just can't pin down about it.

And that's exactly why I like it. I can't seem to pin down this blend's appeal, taste, or even its aroma. All I know for sure is I love it.

Know why I like Savinelli 904s and GBD 9613s? I like all things piratey and the bowls look like a ship's bow.

Nothing amateur about liking what you like, no need for shame.

Great review!
Agreed good review and I must say I like your pipes too. I like your pipe with that texture on the boat bow and shape might have to find one of those at an estate sale. I like skulls too they remind me the hour glass of time runs on all of us and to get out there and enjoy it.

Nice review, thanks. Been trying to branch out a bit from my usual Balkan/English fare, so I put a tin of First Snow on my last order, very much looking forward to it.

My pirating days are all but over; however, that bent Dublin with the beautiful blast makes me want to do some pillaging! Gorgeous shape.
