You can bet I already sent off my letter! BTW, though politics in Chicago and Cook County will never change,

with the current President of the County Board we have half-a-chance of being heard. She's the most reasonable of

the pols to hold that office in a long time. Mind you, I'm not saying she's totally different than the usual tax and spend

Democrats, but she has backed-off of unpopular bills in the past. It doesn't hurt trying.
Oh! The hyperlink in the left hand column of this page, under Acton Alerts, takes you to the IPCPR's website,

which has a form letter you can just click to send.

I live in Cook Co -- not surprised. We can't get spending under control, so we try to offset everything on the backs of smokers. Big Tobacco made us an easy target. If only they could have seen the writing on the wall, they would have followed the lead of alcohol companies and laid off the advertising -- especially the healthier/safer/Doctor's smoke "X" brand crap. Now, politicians are all too eager to increase tobacco taxes every six months. If we're such a green state/county, why don't we increase energy taxes? That would hit everyone equally. "Incentiveize" people to opt for the renewable energy. Of course that won't happen because the energy lobbyists have deep pockets. We continue to levy this burden on the backs of smokers, but what will they do if they achieve their goal of abolishing smoking without actually criminalizing it? That revenue stream will have dried up, and we're back to square one.

Not a fan of any kind of taxes, but what needs to be done IMHO is elect poeple who fully intend on eliminating wasteful spending with nothing off the table. This includes entitlements, the pentagon and the Federal Reserve, which is a private corporation (a lot of people don't know this) who does things that would land anyone else in the financial business a long prison sentence. Likewise, Congresspeople have long had an immuntiy from prosecution when it came to using inside information about the market to buy up tons of stock in companies that they are propping up. This defies party lines. If the IRS would lay off the average taxpaying public and audit the Fed, Department of Defense and Pharmaceutical companies, there would be a lot of governing bodies with missing seats because a huge number of powerful and important people would be in the Federal Pen.

You really should make your feeling known as soon as you can in an attempt to stop this new tax becoming law. You don't want to end up like us here in the U.K. Pipe tobacco tax (the lowest of all the tobacco taxes by far) is currently £84.98 per KG or £186.96 per pound which is $295.62 per pound just in tax!! Not to mention paying OVER $8 per gallon for gas to get to the shop. Fight it now or you'll all end up as broke as we are!

Don't think I could have said it better. We're getting beat up down here in Texas even at the local level.

I'm happy I moved away from that S&!# hole of a city. Born and raised and never liked living there. I only miss my friends.
