I don't know that this is the correct section for this post. If it is not, then I'm sorry. What is the history of rustic pipes? When did they first appear, what was the point (was it purely aesthetical or something else?) and why did the term "rustic". As far as I know, rustic means something related to the rural, countryside, etc.

Sorry to derail this thread -

When I was residing at a university college (in the early 1970's), one was rusticated (sent home to the "farm") for misdemeanors such as entertaining ladies in one's room "after hours".
Being a Catholic institution, buggery was (presumably) OK. But not fornication ;)

Wasn't buggery presumed training for the priesthood?

Most companies graded on two points.

a. How sound the briar is
b. Appearance. grain or imperfection.

Just because there are rusticated or imperfections does not mean that the pipe will not smoke well. I like the look of the wire cut, rusticated and sand blasted look that covers the whole pipe. Those pipes that have groves cut into them and looks like they did it with a dremmel tool looks ugly to me. Even if a pipe is dyed or stained, some colors look good to me and some don't. Shape is another preference that we all have. I have over twenty different shapes of pipe and I smoke them as I feel necessary to fit my mood. I have my share of weird shapes and great grained pipes but they are displayed because I have too many pipes to smoke on a daily bases and I want to keep the good looking pipes -good looking.

If any one has any information of Medico pipes, let me know. They were sold out several times and I can't find any info on them.
