I don't know that this is the correct section for this post. If it is not, then I'm sorry. What is the history of rustic pipes? When did they first appear, what was the point (was it purely aesthetical or something else?) and why did the term "rustic". As far as I know, rustic means something related to the rural, countryside, etc.

When I was residing at a university college (in the early 1970's), one was rusticated (sent home to the "farm") for misdemeanors such as entertaining ladies in one's room "after hours".
Being a Catholic institution, buggery was (presumably) OK. But not fornication ;)
