Hi all,

I’m a new pipe smoker (literally took it up the start of this month), based in the south west of england.
Decided to take up the pipe as I enjoy cigars and wanted another way to enjoy tobacco but with the ability to alter smoking times, as you don’t get that with cigars.

I have started with aromatics and have currently tried G&H Cherry and Vanilla. But I’m open to suggestions.
Currently have the one pipe but have seen some beautiful Peterson’s that i wouldn’t mind starting to collect.
Any tips you can give to a newbie will always be appreciated

Welcome from Austin, Texas.

You are on the right track with GH&Co. Also, look at San Gawith. All of their stuff that I've tried is top notch.

The only problem with starting there, you may be disappointed with 80% of the non-Gawith blends on the market... #firstworldproblems

You can always alter you cigar smoking time... nana

Welcome matey?.

As Jay already said, Gawith Hoggarth & Samuel Gawith offer a very wide range of flavours and top notch blends. Samuel Gawith's Full Virginia Plug, Kendal Plug & St. James Plug are in many people's top 5 tobacco lists. If you're a cigar smoker their Brown No.4 Roll Twist is worth a look as well.

Another blending house that you should DEFINITELY take a look at is JF Germain's. They don't offer the large range that the Gawiths do but their Brown Flake (a straight Virginia) and Rich Dark Flake (a Virginia/Burley) are world class. Germain's Medium Flake is also excellent, it's a Virginia flake with a citrus/grapefruit topping.

Hi & big welcome from the top left corer of South Carolina. Glad to have you with us!

Just a word on Peterson's -- older ones are good but a lot of reports of poor drilling & fit. Not saying don't, just keep an out. ;)

Welcome from central North Carolina, U.S. One tin of premium pipe tobacco in the U.S. that will give you about twenty smokes costs about what two or three good cigars would. Plus, as you mention, you can smoke pipes successfully intermittently, and you can mix blends and condiments at will, giving you much more control. So I think you've come to a better place! But many or most of the members also smoke cigars, regularly or on occasion.

Hello from southwest Michigan. Best newbie advise is to try all sorts of different blends. Reviews can be helpful but you just dont know if you like something until you try it. If you find a blend that jumps out to you try similar blends by different blenders.

Welcome from another newbie. I like some Peterson's pipes as well...you have to decide if you like their P-Lip or a Fishtail. I hate the P-Lip and only buy their pipes with a fishtail bit. BTW, I just imported a Land Rover Defender 90 from the UK, so I feel like I know you lol. Not sure of UK tobacco's but you might check our Rattray Bagpipers Dream. Good reviews for an aro and I bet you can get that easily there in the UK.

Thank you all for the warm welcome and advice, it will definitely get put to good use. I went for a walk locally and took my pipe with me. Will be picking some new tobacco shortly as I’m almost out of my first pouch.

Hi. So far the ones that have stuck out to me from a Peterson are not fitted with their P-lip stem. Is it wrong that I’m drawn towards some of their more colourful offerings such as the Atlantic range?
Nice on the Land Rover! Some of the older defenders of looked after will last for decades. I’ll have a look at the Rattrays as I didn’t realise they had tobacco out as well as their pipes
