It may just be the tobacco, on both problems. Depends on the pipe, too; what are you smoking? Tobacco for tobacco, bent stems will usually smoke a little cooler than straights due to the extra distance the smoke has to travel. A lot of people get cooler smokes with Virginia blends.
How fast & hard you smoke will affect it too; if you puff on that sucker like a bellows, it's gonna be hot no matter what's in the bowl. }
Believe it or not, something as seemingly pedestrian as Sir Walter Raleigh (original, not the aromatic) is a good choice to try. It's a mildish cube cut burley -- not too finely cut & without much flavoring, both of which can definitely add to a hot smoke.
Aldecaker's right on Captain Black; unless you practically spread it out on a doubled-up paper towel on the dashboard of your car in summer, that stuff ain't *never* gonna dry! (I actually do like CB, but I pay attention to it when I smoke it & always have my lighter handy like Fidel did for his cigars.)
