In reading descriptions and reviews, how are these 2 types of tobaccos similar/different? First, I know that dark fired is a treatment and not a type of tobacco but humor me and treat it as a type for the sake of discussion. From what I can surmise, they have a similar smell and could possibly be used interchangeably in a blend? Maybe?

Latakia is an Oriental leaf smoked over fire, Dark Fired is Kentucky Burley cured over fired.

I am not quite sure if fire-curing and smoking are similar processes.

As far as taste goes I have yet to notice similarity between those two.
Dark-Fired to me does not overwhelm when used in abundance, as much as Latakia does.

Edgeworth, Solani Silver Flake and some others are fairly mild.

Aquadoc, I recommend get an ounce or so of straight blending latakia at some point. Its handy for adding a pinch of smokiness to a bowl, or making your own blends up and even just the smell of it in the jar will make it very unlikely for you to mistake it for any other leaf again!

U.S Dark fired Kentucky Bureley is unique and high quality leaf, I got to love this leaf during my Ryo cigarette

years, smooth, earthy, bold and spicey with some little sweetish, sidenote, nonetheless,as far as pipetobaccoes go

KDF,yep I real do like it but as usual that KDF nicotine content has tendency to put me on my knees, sometime in proper sence of the word, yet I got to try out that Solani Silver ,meanwhile the Peterson Irish flake while such a beutiful stuff this is, it nerly put me into coffin, each time nic pounch was quaranteed when I did reached for it, But I keep learning further, finally as far for latakias, this Cyprian(Syrian?)leaf tastes me more sour & smokey and sharp in comparition with Kentucky fired,

Kentucky Dark Fired is called the American Latakia in many, many articles, blogs, and other places on the web. It's not unusual that you find a similarity. But, Latakia when blended with other orientals has a more diverse flavor pattern that dark fire. But, sometimes I do crave a smokiness that either dark fire or Latakia can fill. They are both wonderful condimental leaves, but also very different, as others have said.
